I was beyond most of my peers at maths and physics at about the age of 6-15. In fact, I participated in contests with remarkable results. I was 7th at physics and among the top 20 at maths (only the first 3 or so were ranked) in my country. Later on, I declined rapidly.
I can relate pretty well to that; I was in the top 30 or so for my province in a big math competition back in grade 12. Yet, in first year university, I ended up getting terribly lost in and failing calculus and linear algebra the first time through. While I have since cleared the full university calculus series (Calc 1-3, plus diff. eq.) with pretty good grades, I think my biggest issue is that I find it really hard to read math. (However, I'm probably still quite good at math overall, except for my off days where I keep miscopying and misreading symbols, which I think is probably ADHD related; my earlier issues in my university career have (likely) simply dealt a blow to my overall mathematical confidence). Compared to the physics students, I'm probably worse at the sort of math we're supposed to do, but relative to much of the engineering students, not to mention the general public, I'm probably doing pretty decent.
PS: I like your new signature quote, SammichEater.
