Hi just wondering is it more difficult to dx a teenager because if AS is linked to speech and language difficulties as a child does one catch up as a teenager and maybe other traits as a child are not as noticeable.

My sister had her son assessed by a speech & language therapist and she reported that he was average in all the tests applied. Reason for the assessment was that he is struggling in english and maths and he also has many AS traits. I know a S&L therapist can't give a dx but for me that's where I got the referral for my son and the first I heard about AS.

My son is younger than my sisters son. Where should my sister go from here she is worried about college as her son will be a way from home and he does not seem to be able to manage himself without lots of support from her at home. He might not have AS but there is difficulties, any suggestions?

Yes, when I first heard about Asperger's, it was last year. I read a little about it in a memoir...it just mentioned a little about AS. I looked it up and found myself displaying many traits, so I told my mom after a couple of days. As I am a teenager, my mom thought I was going through a teen phase. She ignored it for a while, until, eventually she took me for evaluation. During the session the psychiatrist said that he thinks I certainly have Asperger's, but strangely he did not issue a certificate or official dx paper. Usually I function highly, but I used to get bullied up to seventh grade. I am quite normal around people, just odd. I was however suspected as autistic in elementary school. Later i was labelled as gifted. Maybe he has a similar condition as mine. I hope that helps.
