I thought I was Aspergean for a period of 6 months, until I decided to undergo a formal psychological evaluation. It turned out that my problem is a Personality Disorder Not-Otherwise-Specified, not Asperger's.

What the NOS label means is that while I meet the general criteria for a Personality Disorder, I don't meet all of the criteria for any specific Personality Disorder, and instead present several symptoms consistent with those of several Personality Disorders. (I'm guessing I have several Cluster A and Cluster C Personality Disorder traits, since I'm nowhere near being histrionic, narcissistic, borderline or antisocial.)

So I think it's funny that I thought I had Asperger's Syndrome. You see, I cried for help on so many message boards, this one included, and so many people told me that I sound like a person with Asperger's, that I believed it was more than possible that I had Asperger's.

Now I feel stupid for believing that I had Asperger's Syndrome. I suspect that during those 6 months of delusion I subconsciously adopted a few Asperger's-like traits that I didn't have.

I wonder how many people here are also deluded. Please comment.

Do you have sensory issues? I'm just wondering.

Mw99, don't ever listen to only 1 psychological evaluation, did you take any tests? i had several evaluations done in my 25+ years and believe me there all have been wrong, except this last one which proves quite a bit, did you take the following tests?

Personal Assessment Inventory (PAI)
Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory(SASSI)
Fundamental Inventory of Relational Orientation,Behavior and Feeling (FIRO-B & FIRO-F)
Codependacy Assesment (CODA)
Coping Mechanisms (COPE)
Latent Internalized Parenting Effects(LIPHE)

if you didn't you didn't have a good psychologist.

i know for a fact that psychologist that are owned by the government don't do anything.. they don't even give you tests.

also my diagnoses kind of proves i have aspergers or something very close to it, heres a small list of diagnoses i have, i have much more then this.

Somatization Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Major Depressive Disorder
Posttaumatic stress disorder
Schizophrenia (undifferentiated Type)
Social Phobia
Cognitive Disorder(autism symptom)
NOS (autism symptom)
Personality Disorder
Visual impairment (autism)
Significiant sensory-motor Integration Delay(autism), Hearing loss in left ear and mild sensorial loss in right ear, Disc disorder, intervertebral, lumbar

Do you mean like hypersensitivity to tight clothing, etc?

Congratulations I guess.

They said it sounds like you have AS. There is a difference. I interput it as them suspecting you might have it, not a fact and they aren't saying you have it. They are just saying it sounds like you do.

PDD-NOS is still on the spectrum, though. I was diagnosed with it before I was diagnosed with AS.

No, he was diagnosed with a personality disorder NOS because he didn't quite meet any of the criterias for it.

I don't know the name of all the tests I took, but I completed around 8 to 10 pages full of multiple choice questions. The psychologist also asked me several questions similar to the ones in the test. He couldn't give me a diagnosis immediately after the end of the evaluation because allegedly he needed to evaluate my answers with a panel of psychologists.

Of course. Noone can diagnose a stranger over the internet. But so many people told me that I sound like a person with Asperger's, that I would have been remiss not to consider the possiblity that I had Asperger's. Then I read the criteria for Asperger's and it seemed like I could have that condition. Then I came to WP and was amazed by how alike my way of thinking is to that of so many people on this forum.

He said personality disorder. It's a different animal.

There are many psychologists + psychiatrists who don't have a clue about Asperger's.

If you believe you have Asperger's and are keen for a diagnosis, seek another opinion.

We should also consider the possibility that they're right. He seems to be pleased with his diagnosis. Who are we to be second-guessing?

Some of the personality disorders share characteristics with AS, so it's an easy mistake to make. There are probably quite a few people here who mistakenly believe they have AS.

I think that if your belief that you have AS motivated you to seek help, it was NOT a stupid mistake. If this forum has provided some much needed support, and you sound like you needed it, then it wasn't stupid. The only stupid thing would be refusing to consider that your difficulties could have a different cause.

Are you sure it's not PDD-NOS? Or are you absolutely sure they said personality disorder NOS?

I have PDD-NOS, which is on the spectrum, but I believe that the definitions for PDD-NOS and Asperger's are reversed depending upon where you live and where your psych. studied. So you may go to a psychologist in the UK and be diagnosed with Asperger's under the same criteria.

Yes. They told me I have a Personality Disorder. When I asked them which one, they said NOS.

You might have appeared too eager for the diagnosis, on an unconscious level, and so they didn't give it to you.

If you appear well versed in it, which I think you are if you've been doing research, on this site, then maybe you know too much.

PD's seem like total cop-outs. I wouldn't buy it. Ridiculous if you ask me. Everyone has a PD if you read the descriptions. Too broad.

Who is perfect? No one. Some people are callous, some are vain/narcissists, some are moody, some are anit-social, some are liers--come on. PD is a joke.

PD-NOS is even more ridiculous. What will they come up with next--human disorder?

If you know you have something that resembles Aspergers, then I'm sure you can find the right person to give you this diagnosis.

I understand your feeling uncomfortable with this vague sort of diagnosis. I wouldn't accept it either. It is, as I said, a complete cop out. Many psychs feel AS is trendy and too many people are trying to buy a diagnosis. You could have hit one of these. Psychology is suppose to be nonbiased, but it is very subjective. Go with your gut feeling. If you felt at home on this site, you are, most likely, on the spectrum.
