hello, i am the father of a 3 year old daughter who was diagnosed a year ago as being on the autism spectrum.she has undergone cognitive and language intervention with some success in making her accept tutoring. i moved her 2 months ago to a specialist autism center and extra OT and language interventions at home, where she is improving day by day .she is verbally delayed but can express in speech all her basic needs in one or more word sentences and has understood vocabularly (around 50 words including verbs ,objects and animal names) but functionally uses may be ten words, she has social impairment towards her peers but generally not towards adults. could she be overdiagnosed ? .

One of the criteria is:

Quote:
2. failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level

This includes a tendency to establish relationships with adults as a child. I'm not sure if that happens at three years old, though.

I don't know that anyone here can tell you whether she was misdiagnosed. If you can, it might be worth seeking a second opinion, or at least waiting until she's ready to start school and having her evaluated again.

Maybe it was those interventions that helped her develop faster.

I didn't talk to people when I was three, other than saying a few words to my siblings and mother.

I think three is way too young to know what kind of social impairment she has. Wait til she gets into school to see how she goes. I went through a period of getting along with adults more than people my age. Now I get along with 18 year olds, though I'm still most comfortable around people 30 years and older.

Basically what you said doesn't point to any sign she has been misdiagnosed. Isn't early intervention about decreasing symptoms?

Perhaps her therapy is just going pretty well?

One thing to remember is that it doesn't matter in autism how well the kid is getting along with adults: it's how well she gets along with peers. I suspect you'd see a big change when she goes to school in her interactions.

You've given no reason for me to doubt her diagnoses so I'd say stick with it and let whoever is in control of her case know about your thoughts, transparency is important.

from what i understood from you , there is no way to predict the probable developmenal outcome of intervention for three year olds with some autistic features ( she scored 28 in CARS test ) .

There's a parent's section here on WP.

It wouldn't have been just the language delay that gave the diagnosis, would it?

Other tests would include attachment to parents, pointing out things, gaze following, and other stuff. From what I understand, 2 years is probably the earliest age when these kinds of impairments can be observed.

I hate it, it just means autism related issues get forgotten because they're parent related, that forum isn't nearly as active and the threads on it get little attention.

Depends on which asd you are talking about. Autism, yes, but Asperger's may not be significant until adolescence or adulthood.

And I feel the lack of posting there has to do with how most on the spectrum are more literal minded. They see the Parent's Section title and come to the thought path of I am not a parent thus I have no right to post there.
