I believe that I am an excellent writer. You're right that talking is not the same thing. When I was in High School, my Senior English teacher, who was also the debate coach, drafted me for his novice squad, because I was such an excellent writer. He learned to regret that idea. When I am running off at the mouth, there is simply no telling what is going to come out. With writing, one has time to consider, proofread, weigh choices of words, notice illogic, rewrite. After it's once translated to sound, it's gone, on the record, unchangeable, whether you like it or not. I don't believe that I've gotten any better with time, though I've been bright enough not to get myself into formal debate again!
