Can You Hear Dog Whistles?

Can you hear the sound emitted by a dog whistle?
Yes and I'm diagnosed with an ASD 31%  31%  [ 17 ]
Yes, but I never went for ASD diagnosis/don't know diagnosis 18%  18%  [ 10 ]
Yes, and I went for diagnosis and was found not to have an ASD 0%  0%  [ 0 ]
No, and I'm diagnosed with an ASD 13%  13%  [ 7 ]
Never tried/don't know and I'm diagnosed with an ASD. 20%  20%  [ 11 ]

Saw a video about autism and a girl said she was able to hear dog whistles. Curious.

I don't know....I've never noticed them out in the world. I looked up dog whistles and I can hear the sample ones I found online. This is called a silent whistle linkWTF! I'm betting anyone can hear this.

Edit: warning: above sound is really shrill and annoying and possibly painful.

I know .......it's horrible! Maybe I should have put a warning. That's actually advertised as a silent whistle though. I don't get it.......

daydreamer84, that one was absolutely horrible! I had to throw my headphones off of me. Yikes!
Edit: And after a few minutes it gave me head ache.


We got a dog whistle when our first dog was young, and I didn't hear it.

With my tinnitus, probably not. Either that or there's someone blowing a dog whistle near me 24/7.

I listened voluntarily, knowing, so it's my own damned fault but ... aaaaugghh that was horrible.

While it wouldn't surprise me if some kids could hear the whistles, I'd be very surprised if anyone over the age of 25 or 30 could hear them. As we age, our ability to hear high frequency sounds diminish over time.

My hearing is more like someone half my age (43, early 20s). My vision is fairly sharp too.

If you're talking about NTs, I'd agree with you. If you're talking about autistic people, we tend to have unusual sensory profiles.

There's nothing silent about dog whistles. My mum has one and I didn't know. I was in the room next door when she blew it. I heard the most horrendous high pitched noise, even worse than the smoke alarm. I shouted and covered my ears, and when she came to see what the matter was, I asked her what the awful noise was. She said, "What, can you hear that?" and I said, "yes, aren't I supposed to?" and she said it was a dog whistle and supposed to be silent.
