I personally don't, it think it's more an oppurtunity for NTs to get on higher ground and make other people think they're interesting, sort of like a social ladder. Like the better you are at being trendy, the more you are worth, the more friends you will have and the "hotter" your future wife will be I guess.

Sorry for the bitter reply on this.

Someone told me that wearing trendy clothes meant you participated in society, which meant other people would unconsciously think you study/have a good job/earn money so you'd be interesting and intelligent.

Personally I find fashion a bit weird, but I'm glad the huge warm 'christmas' sweaters are popular now so I fit in by accident! :P

There is a technical side to fashion that could be very interesting to aspies. It's easy to brush it off as a status thing alone, and for most NT people that really is what it is so that makes it even easier to brush off.

But the artists in the fashion world really are people who want to contribute to what I see as the biggest on-going art project that the world has.

Essentially each artist contributes something that fits in with what everyone else is contributing while still having it's own identity. As a result the entire fashion industry has these sorts of flows that I imagine sort of like waves. If you get deep enough into it you can predict what will happen next and where things will go, how long they will last, and how they will make people feel. (The music industry, another interest of mine, does similar things)

On top of that there is the aspect of seasons, showings, fashion week, sewing techniques, patterns, entertainment sooooo many things to really enjoy on a technical level.

You can actually do ALL of this without putting on a single article of clothing (although if you are doing it in public you should probably be wearing something :p )

However, it would have to appeal to that individual I would think but I know for sure that it could be something that an aspie could be interested in.

I try to dress nicer and if it happens that a piece of clothing is a trendy brand for a different demographic I am going to still wear it because I may be wearing it for a different reason-it is comfortable to wear for me so my comfort in wearing an article of clothing is more important to me than other peoples comfort in me wearing it or my right to wear it in comparison to the beautiful young hip and trendy people.

I understand why people care about it. They're cavemen and women after all.

I don't care about it. I'm something else.

I don't 'know' what people are wearing, unless I'm asked about it, and then I look at their outfit. But I understand trends if I read about them.

Not sure if I "get it", but I feel too many people care about what others think of them, and these businesses play into that. Same for stuff like popular shows or movies or games. Not all are necessarily bad, but it's not too hard to tell when things are unoriginal and lack any real substance.

Why is it popular to separate style and substance and put style in the 'worthless' category and substance in the 'good' category? Not all substance is anything that you want to keep and style does alot to communicate substance in an intuitive, precognitive sense.

Style alone isn't the problem, but when it is the only thing going for a particular product, I find it hard to be interested in at all. Of course, it depends on what exactly we're talking about; I couldn't care less for clothes because as far as I'm concerned, they're just there to keep me from being naked. As for stuff like movies, it's easy to tell when they are just blatant rip-offs cashing in on the most popular trend and it just comes off as lazy to me.

I've never understood the concept of fashion and trends. I don't understand how something can look "good" this season or year and look "bad" the next season or year. It's either good or it's not.

I just wear what I like whether it's currently in style or not.

I think the style and substance dichotomy is probably living because of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. I just don't understand why substance is treated as being a thing wholly different than the style of a medium. In my head, the style is the substance.

I think that In AS issues clothing is chosen on the basis of what feels nice. Certain kinds of jumpers have a nice feeling on the inside reminiscent of a teddy bear such as hoodies even though they have been in fashion since the late 1990s. If what feels nice to a person looks cool to the NT world then that is purely by chance. I do not like wearing a tie it feels abit unpleasant round my neck. I'm not sure about other people on the autistic spectrum think.

I understand it completely.

When I as younger I use to follow fashion. There is absolutely no other explination for the parachute pants, asymetrical belts, clunky animal jewelry made of wood, polyester Marcia Brady two piece skirt outfits, Gloria Vanderbildt jeans with baby socks and Candie's spike heel shoes, asymetrical haircuts, spiral perms, white lipstick, jelly shoes, etc.

Some things, like disco, cannot be comprehended except by the mere fact that those who wear them are allowing "mob thinking" to rule their asthetics.

Nowdays, I wear what pleases me, be it in fashion or out of fashion. Most of my clotheshave been in fashion at some point in time. In fact, one of my favorite pieces is a "Dynasty-esque" black, ice blue, and silver, sequined coctail dress covered in sequins with the BIG shoulder pads. Yes, I realize that it's tacky but I think it's the most gorgeous dress. I bought it in he 80s and spent about $1500 on it then. It was for an event I was going to, before I had kids to take up all my money. I wore it once, then it hung in the closet for decades. About ten years ago I decided to just dress for me. So, I have pulled that dress off and worn it several times just because I like it. Always after five though, I wouldn't wear sequins before then. I love it so much that I'll put up with the horrible scratchy feeling of them.

My look changes from day to day depending on my mood. One day I look like a biker chick, the next I might dress like "I Love Lucy", the next I might dress like a Victorian Goth, another day I might be dressed like your grandmother. It's just whatever I feel like on a particular day. Today, I don't know yet who I'll be. I went back to sleep after the kids went to school, and I haven't looked in the closet yet to see what strikes my fancy for today. I'll let you know though, if you're interested.

I could if I wanted to, but frankly, I just don't give a s*** about it.
