Because we are smart and it is naturally assumed that smart people are good with computers.

Well I'm not interested in computer hardware and have a laptop.

In fourth grade I taught myself simple programs for the Apple2e from a school library book. People seemed amazed at my ability to do this but I never did more than that and didn't manage to get my first computer until I was 33.

some aspies are smart while some are not, same for NTs, some are smart while some are stupid. i do not agree that smart people are naturally good with computers. Having a very high IQ certainly does not equate being a nerd or geek. colombian singer shakirah has an IQ of over 140.

The history of personal computing is a place where people on the autistic spectrum have been very visible. People like Bill Gates and Steve Wozniak, as well as the stereotypical IT person in the average office, are examples of autistic types who are good at computers that people encounter in mainstream culture.

Because unlike people, when they get annoying you can use the off button.

Because people assume if you're not interested in people you must be interested in objects or numbers.

I prefer ideas to social interaction, but fiction and philosophy aren't part of the prevailing Aspie stereotype.

Not all aspies are good with computers but a lot are. I taught myself to program at age 11. That was 30 years ago when almost no one had a home computer. Now I am a software developer for one of Canada's largested banks.

That. But I think many of us feel drawn to computers because they give us an easier, less stressful and more effective way of communication.

I love text-based communication and hate talking, even on the phone. I'm a bit worried to see that with increasing bandwidth, talking is quickly becoming the main form of online communication. Take video blogging, for example. Or video tutorials on youTube. I simply don't get that. In the time it takes to speak a single sentence, I can read half a page.

I also don't get our school system. How is a person standing in front of a class and talking more effective than having students read the study material? I think that is the main reason why I was mediocre in school, despite the fact that I suck up information like a sponge when I'm reading. I always read a novel under my desk in class, because listening to people is both stressful and bores me to death. I wish people would communicate more through IMs, emails and forums instead of talking face to face.

I had a couple of friends in an online game wanting me to do Skype with them. I refused. I absolutely won't do any kind of voice or video chat online.

Also the online game I played has considered adding voice chat and I'm against it. I absolutely won't use it.

I cannot deal with Skype. I don't do telephone calls either and Skype is pretty much online telephone with an image (if you choose to have one). I used to be terrified of computers when I was younger but that might be because I broke them all the time  we used Acorns back in them days!
