hey aspies, try harder to find out about NTs and learn their good points. we have to understand the people around us so that we can do as well or better than them.

I did that for the past 21 years... Found out i have AS n my best friends are a still a bunch of AS/NT's n we all live in the NT of Australia!! go figure haha.

I know their ways but i prefer the aspie way...

I agree. Being an aspie, it's very hard, but generally people treat me well. So I treat them well and get to know them too. The vast majority of my friends and acquaintances are nt, of course, but they are all nice and decent people.

Remember not to lose yourself in the process of fitting in though. I once did and it was hell.

^^^ I wouldn't say it's a problem just something that makes us different. We are a minority yes, I will never disagree with that. And yes it is a mutual thing, both sides need to seek to understand each other.

The difference? Aspies are forced to learn NT ways because we live in an NT majority world. NT's don't have to take a second glance at Aspies, because we are less than 1% of the population.

Even though I agree with the poster and I realize the positive points of NT's (some of the people who I love the most are NT), at the end of the day, it's Aspies that suffer from social isolation, it's Aspies that get taken advantage of, and it's Aspies that have to navigate through the social world and who get discriminated against.

Forget the 'Us vs. Them' talk. Human beings are notoriously bad (amongst ourselves, anyway) at understand both each other and ourselves. Just like autism, neurotypicality lies on a vast spectrum as well, and pigeonholing either group is doing us all a disservice.

I thought this was going to be one of those threads where someone was quoting something mean that someone said to them.

I think that spectrum folks automatically try even if they say that they refuse to... there are times that neurotypical people are just confusing and no one can understand them but there are also times that while they are different you can figure out why and how to translate that into your own experience...

The trick though, is not so much figuring out how to understand their mismatching behaviors, but instead to recognize the similarities. This is powerful in any diversity context. Once you figure out your similarities to another culture/personality type/lifestyle you can see how those similarities relate to slightly different aspects... once you understand the slightly different aspects that usually leads to understanding the very different aspects... before you know it... dangit you understand and can get along with someone who is very very different from yourself who perhaps before literally pissed you off and you just wanted to tell to go away...

Diversity is a fun thing if you are willing to study it as an interest.

I couldn't agree more. I you like NT's learn about them. If you hate them know your enimy. Don't b***h about them not learning about you when you wont learn about them.

Take a look a Psycoligy, Primatoly and acting. The basic 6 facial expressions.

You can always choose not to use it but you will have the choise. It's not all about changing who you are. Being able to predict their actions is useful too.

I have been doing just that for the last 54 years.

From what I've learned of their "good points", I would never voluntarily take any "cure" that would turn me into one of them.
