I have been researching this for a little while and wondered if some people with fragile x syndrome can be diagnosed with aspergers. For instance if a child has marked learning disabilities due to birth but show a normal intelligence in adulthood could a diagnosis of aspergers or another spectrum disorder be made if that person meets much of the criteria? Fragile x is either there or it is not. Its fact. Just like the spectrum disorders are. But could diagnosticians often overlook intellectual progress from childhood to adulthood? What do you all think about a diagnosis of aspergers and fragile x syndrome together?

Fragile X sounds like a cool name for an emo superhero.

I can definitely see many similarities. However I have not yet had my coffee this morning, so constructive input from me will have to wait.

There may be a genetic link of some kind, but it is most likely that many people with fragile X syndrome exhibit a range of symptoms that are similar to those of autism.

According to this National Fragile X Foundation page, 15-30% of people with fragile X are also diagnosed with autism. Only 2-6% of people with autism have fragile X - which makes fragile X the most common known genetic cause of autism discovered so far. http://www.fragilex.org/fragile-x-assoc ... -syndrome/

FSX is a chromosome mutation that causes autism and other disorders. A small percentage of ASD results directly from FSX (around 5%). 30% of people with FSX meet the criteria for autism. It's either there or it isn't because it is only one of the causes for autism. They are definitely related. I think at some point people with an ASD DX will be tested for FXS by default.

Fragile X can cause Autism, but it has no relation to Aspergers at all. Fragile X has a very specific genetic cause, and it often causes mental retardation, which usually contradicts Aspergers.

Every developmental disorder makes the person socially awkward/intellectually delayed in some way. Maybe not the same way as those on the Autism spectrum but still in some sort of other way. If I was in a room with other young people with other conditions besides Autism or AS, I bet I would still be able to relate to them in some way and have things in common with them. I'm friends with a girl with mild Mental Retardation, and it affects the way she communicates to other people, but not in the same way as me because she doesn't have the same problem as me.
