I just had two sirens go kind of close by my house, and now I'm freaked out and can't fall back asleep. It's been 20 minutes and my heart just now stopped thumping.

This got me thinking about all the other sounds that are too intense for me, and how it seems like others handle it fine: vacuum cleaners, blenders, drills, and lots of other things which scream at me, lol. I try not to let it show, but inside I'm thinking, "Please stop doing that!"

Does anyone else have issues with sounds being too much to handle? Is that a normal response?

That happens to me with loud car or motorcycle engines.......I always feel like the driver is revving up their engine to "show off" and purosely trying to be as loud as they can.

Voices. The louder, the worst I am. I don't like cars/motorcycles, mowers, brush cutters, and pretty much anything motor driven (fuel combustion).

I'm ok with fans. Sirens too.

I really like gunshots from a distance (far enough away to not cause discomfort/damage to one's ears). Up close, ear protection doesn't make them sound like much of anything though. I really like lightning too.

Some noises sound too intense for me. I can't stand motorbikes that are so loud they shake the Earth, and I also can't stand some sirens because my ears squeak when they pass.

I also hate it when I'm talking, and a noise suddenly occurs what is louder than my voice, because my voice seems to hurt the inside my of head, if that makes sense.

A lot of noises scare me and make my heart start thumping. I hate motorcycles, sirens, fireworks, doors slamming, and many other noises.

I can't tell if I experience noises as more intense than NTs do. All I know is that sudden loud noises shock and scare me. When a car honks right next to me, I almost fall off my bicycle. I even get startled when the toast jumps out of the toaster. But I can listen to loud music without any problems, because it's not a sudden and unexpected sound.

Edited to add: Sometimes I experience noises as a physical sensation. When my shower makes weird gurgling noises, I attribute this to my digestive system and can almost feel the noise in my belly. Some sounds almost cause me physical pain, kind of like a fingernails-on-a-blackboard effect. And some words and consonants sound aggressive and threatening to me depending on how sharply people pronounce them.

Sirens! I know why dogs howl. I used to double over in pain if an ambulance drove by when I was running. awful!
Anything shrill/loud basically.
Also (again with the dog thing!) those anti-bark things designed to hurt dog ears when they bark. They drive me up the wall! I can actually hear them plain as day.
Frankly, one time they tested my hearing in elementry school & I heard noises coming from the tester's equipment. He was stunned, said in all his years he had never had that happen! LOL

My neighbors below me installed a solar-powered anti-mosquito buzzer on the front lawn last summer. Every 30 seconds (I've counted) it emits a high-pitched noise for about 5 seconds. I think that humans aren't supposed to hear these buzzers, but I did. It was maddening :x I could hear it through my closed living room window, and so could my cats judging by their reaction. The cats got used to it pretty quick, but I didn't :? Luckily they've turned it off during the winter.

To make things worse, I have about 40% hearing loss on one ear ever since I stood next to a giant speaker at a rock concert 22 years ago. I hear perfectly fine on the other ear, but I can't tell the direction of sounds anymore. When people stand in front of me and talk to me, their voices often appear to come from the side or from behind. And when I hear noises outside my window, I get the impression that the sound source is somewhere in my apartment. It's really confusing.

I think that loud noises are intense for many people. My mother often freaks out at loud noises, e.g. motorcycle passing unexpectedly or me turning on car radio unexpectedly.

When there's a loud noise, it kind of "shorts out" my ears and I don't hear it right, and the sensation I get is VERY unpleasant (best I can describe it is sort of electrical) Slamming doors, sirens, even a very loud voice, can all do it.

If I wear earplugs that reduce the sound by somewhere between 12 and 20 dB, then I find what I hear is far closer to what people describe than if I don't wear them.

I don't know why, but it seems relevant.

(And yes)

Oh, where to begin? Sudden loud, jarring noises can make me really really freak out and scream in fright, especially if I'm already nervous or not prepared for it at all. Dogs barking, car horns, screeching tires, cars rushing outside my apartment late at night have almost given me heart attacks, teenagers banging around or screaming on the street late at night (especially girl teens with their shrill voices), But I can't wear earplugs all night long because they hurt my ears, and when I'm outside I need to be able to hear oncoming traffic and such. But I'm not nearly as bad as I was when I was in my twenties and finally moved out on my own. My anxiety was so bad that just the sound of the doorbell would make me scream, even when I was expecting someone!

Definitely. As a kid it was balloons and the popping noise it would make that would send me over the edge. Now it's any kind of explosion (mainly in movies, war movies that my roommates always watched) that upset my hearing. People don't get what a impact it actually has on me

Yes. Loud bass music makes me feel like my heart is melting and I have to get away or I'll surely die. Not really, but it physically hurts and my stomach can be upset for hours. Bright lights and certain smells have similar affects. I can actually hear some lights.

That, and the buzzing/honking of our smoke detector. 8O

I hate the sound of balloons popping. I also don't like sirens, fireworks, revved up car and motorcycle engines, loud drunks, older kids walking past my window and loud speakers on the backs of cars. I'm actually enjoying some quiet time, because I bought a package of earplugs today. Orange ones to boot. :)

I've never had an hour of quiet time in the evening, since the first night that I've lived in my apartment. I always had to have my music going, than I'd be up at 3 in the morning. Let's not talk about my first 3 months on my own. Let's think about the present. :)
