I'm EXTREMELY calm and have that Aspie monotone voice. I don't freak out about things easily, and am normally very easygoing and laugh a lot. Unfortudentaly NTs (and sometimes other Aspies even!) confuze me as a pothead for these reasons. Today I was sitting with my friends at lunch and they were saying they were going to one of my old friend's house to get high. Then one of my friends said she didn't smoke, and was pointing out the NON stoners and then got to me and she just paused for a really long time. Then she asked, "You don't smoke......right?" I burst out laughing and said even though people think I do, I don't. I'm not sure she believes me though....
I've actually gotten sent home before because everyone thought I was high. My parents had to make sure the school knew I've acted like this my whole life and I don't do any drugs, I don't even take any medication!! !!
How common are Aspies confuzed as stoners anyways?

I remember in grade 9, my friend told me out of the blue that a lot of people thought I smoked weed. I didn't do any smoke tobacco or drink alcohol, let alone smoke weed. Even she was surprised when I told her I'd never smoked it before.

I don't think teachers suspected me of it. They just thought I was severely depressed and/or suicidal, because I was quiet and rarely talked to people if I wasn't familiar with them.

People also thought I was a lesbian, because I had short hair, wore baggy clothes, and didn't use make-up. In fact, some people thought I was a boy.

Rumours are pointless and strange. I think they're created because people's lives aren't interesting enough so they have to fabricate stories about other people for a thrill.

Well Its possible the slower processing speed some people with aspergers including myself have could make it appear that way, also being extremely calm probably adds to it. In my case I have anxiety so I am not naturally very calm but, I tend to process things kinda slow for example I am usually the last one to get a joke. So if one does not know that is your natural state its possible for them to assume you're a pot head because cannabis makes people calm and kinda slows you down. It does not make much difference to me though because I smoke anyways...but I can imagine its frustrating if you don't even smoke it.

I have no idea, but people in highschool said I was a pothead, and I didn't start smoking until after I graduated. People who actually knew me outside of school knew I wasn't.

I've also been accused of being gay before, I guess because I don't constantly hit on everything I see, and I don't feel the need to tell my friends, "hey, check out that hot blonde in the short skirt" every five seconds either. I don't really pay attention to appearance anyway because it means absolutely nothing, and I tend to have a different opinion of what's attractive than most people. That, and I just don't feel the need to announce whether or not each and every person I see is "hot."

Oh yeah...I got that comment a lot in Grade 9...they'd ask if I was high, if I could spot them some pot, or some hash...and this being the late '80s, I had no idea why they were making such comments when I hadn't gotten anywhere near such drugs nor did I have the inclination to do so!! ! Oh, and the fact that AS wasn't known yet, didn't exactly help :(

It's ironic, because I'm pretty sure that I seem less autistic when high, since it allows me to shrug off things and not obsess about them.

I don't really remember though, it's been a while...

I get "laid back" a lot. I have been asked if I smoke pot, but I am not sure if they actually thought I did.

Its worst when someone thinks you are ret*d...which happened to me... :?

Yes, it has been suggested to me. My ex husband said he thought that because of the way I moved and gestured when I spoke. Once I went to my best friend's house party and her sister who had just met me thought I was on ecstacy because of how big my eyes were and how I acted, because I was overwhelmed by the amount of people and just because of how I am. It doesnt help if you are caught playing with toys or looking at shiny lights or your hands because those things are comforting or relieve my anxiety or are entertaining.

I've heard the same, even long before I actually was one. I often speak slowly and calmly, and I'm usually an extremely calm person compared to those around me. Cannabis, for me, greatly reduces many Aspergers symptoms. For others it may or may not work as well, I have no idea.

One thing that I find irksome, is when someone thinks I get really really high all the time to reduce symptoms.... I only need a tiny amount to reduce symptoms. Taking too much doesn't help, because even if it helps reduce some symptoms, I'll just be high and that is not the goal, since it impairs in certain ways. Taking large amounts also causes one to build a tolerance to the active chemicals in Cannabis, meaning one will have to take larger and larger amounts for the same effects.

The amount I take wouldn't even be equal to one hit for the regular recreational Cannabis users I know; and this small amount gives me about 16 hours of symptom reduction.

For me it only takes like two hits in the morning to greatly reduce my depression, anxiety and PTSD symtoms........if I want to get 'stoned' though I have to smoke more.

Well I heard if one smokes crack they never experience the high they got the first time again, so it's probably a waste of time and money. lol.

I've gotten the pothead thing (both while I was a pothead and before/after).

I've also been asked if I'm in to heroin or oxycontin.

Yeah, I smoke out of my one-hitter if the goal is just symptom relief. If I'm doing it recreationally, it takes a bowl or so, but I prefer to keep the recreational use low, to minimize tolerance.

People think that of me quite often, I only tried pot once in high school. Worst is when cops think you're a druggie, and you have to prove you're not a druggie somehow. But yes, did get confused for it since high school, still do all quite often even at 20, almost 21. Such is life.
