I found a post in the past that said that people with AS often had trouble in public washrooms. I don't have this issue with public washrooms, but I do have them with school washrooms; the ones at my middle school were pretty much constantly filled with girls hanging out, once after school, some girls got a bit mad at me because I was using the washroom while they were hanging out in there, I always thought they put washrooms in school for people to use the washroom, but hardly anyone used them for that at my middle school. In grade 6, I would NOT use the washroom if there were girls hanging out in there. At my high school, less people hang out in the washrooms, but they aren't any nicer as this going to sound weird, but I have sensory issues with them. I hate the sound of people's feet when they walk across the bathroom floor; it sounds like paper sliding across a hardwood floor, the toilet paper in those washrooms is the worst! It's thin, hard and kind of dusty and REALLY hard to get off the roll. Also, the soap is very harsh, has a bad smell and sometimes, it takes the janitor 3 days to fill the dispensers if they are all out of soap. The water in the sink is also super cold. The worst is the fact that the fans don't work and sometimes, people will do "stinky business" in the bathrooms, and it stinks up the whole washroom (and sometimes, the whole hallway, seriously, one day I was walking down the hall and could smell the washroom from 25 feet away). So, if I go out at lunchtime, I make sure I use the washroom where ever I am to avoid using the school washrooms. If it almost the end of the day, I wait until I get home. I can't get go to long without using the washroom because it I have a hard time concreting if I need to go.

Public washrooms aren't so bad, though sometimes the one's that have poor air circulation because they smell really bad, and some of the are kind of dirty and disgusting. For reason, the washrooms at the malls near my place ALWAYS smell a bit.

Do you have any sensory issues (or social issues) related to washrooms?

I hate going to a public restroom and hearing another guy just zip up his pants and walk right back out the door. Without washing his pissy hands. Ugh. And some of the hand dryers are too loud for my ears. Otherwise I'm fine using public restrooms.

I have some sensory issues in public washrooms, especially if there are flickering lights (I've run into that a few times). I tend to have more of a social aversion to them -- I dislike washing my hands when other people are around for some reason (which is strangely the only problem I have). I always feel awkward doing it, but I feel even more awkward if I don't do it. I think it's because so few people actually wash their hands in public washrooms and I think it might seem weird that I have that particular habit.

Yes I do have sensory issues in public restrooms. The smell is too strong sometimes from the cleaners they use. Or its the other way around and it smells because people obviously have not flushed 8O
The smell usually makes me afraid to touch anything - I have seen some really nasty public restrooms.

The cleaners and the automatic air "fresheners" are too smelly. Yes, people associate them with clean but the chemical smell also means they are toxic. I've thought about taking small cleaning jobs in offices or the mall but can't/won't because of the cleaning products. At home I use natural cleaners as soon as I use up what I have I'll be using the spray bottles to use with home made cleaners. Any scent I put in there will be from natural oils. Orange oil smells great and is really good at cleaning up greasy messes.

Does anyone else hate it that when someone comes out of the loo, they readjust their clothes e.t.c BEFORE they wash their hands? :?
I hold my hands out stiffly in front of me, trying not to touch anything.

I've never heard of people with AS having trouble with public restrooms (I assume these mean public toilets).

When I was younger I wouldn't use public restrooms.

Yes I think public restrooms are disgusting. I have nightmares about them. I try not to touch anything in them, unless I absolutely have to. The smells are horrible, and I hate hearing other people "do their business".

I'm talking about sensory issues. I have them with smelly washrooms, most people seem to deal with smelly washrooms better than I do. It applies more to the "rarer" sensory issues such as with smell.

I always like the all stone bathrooms (stone walls, stone floors) .. Mild lighting reminiscent of candle light, and deep reds and oranges.

It seems less troublesome.

i dunno, but it seems like the fancy bathrooms/lavatories with the fancy paint jobs and decor, they seem to stink a lot less than the plain jane ones. or maybe it is just that the nice colors distract my olfactory sense so that it doesn't notice the stink as much.

I'm not too bad with them, but my son FREAKS OUT when he has to go to the restroom in public. He is terrified of the automatic flushers they put on toilets now and the hand dryers. He makes me cover his ears while he pees and washes his hands.

Maybe the guy didn't pee on his hands, so he didn't feel a need to wash...

"Bathroom" and "restroom" just crack me up. You don't go to public facilities to bathe and they certainly aren't restful.

It is interesting when one studies the etymology of the various terms that none are derived directly from the primary functions, namely to defecate or to urinate. It is a strange tendency of humans to create euphemisms for bodily functions and anything associated with it.
