Some years ago, I read an article in the paper about a former Serbian army officer on trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity.

He denied his culpability, argued the case for his innocence, and in closing said: "...and I am still a citizen of the human race."

This last statement intrigued me, and for awhile I contemplated it; until finally arriving at the conclusion that if the human race is something you have to be a citizen of: then the most I've ever been is a resident alien.

Depending on the social context, sometimes I'm treated as a citizen, sometimes as an outlier, sometimes a freak. I guess only each person can decide for themselves. Sometimes it's hard to summarize your relation to the rest of humanity, huh? So many different people react to you in so many different ways.

I agree that it does depend highly on the context; in my case, the more impersonal the situation, and the less time particular people are going to have to be around me: the nicer they tend to be.

But up through college (and beyond) no one ever wanted to go beyond just being casual friends with me; I had no long-term friendships, and certainly no intimate relationships (when I asked girls out: they would always give polite excuses for why they couldn't, which would always turn increasingly less polite the more times that I asked), and this situation persists to the present day.

I don't see it ever changing.

"Naturalised" might be closest idea.

One who is formally a member of the human race,
but with definite traces of not haviing got there by default or instinct.

I was quite late deciding that these other moving organic objects were the same sort of thing as me. There were too many subtle and not-so-subtle differences.

"Could never afford the smugglers fee." If I'd fake NT behavior in every inch to fit in I'd rather kill myself.

Compared to the average person, I'm probably a resident. But average is simply the middle, where you are from there is up for debate. There is no definition about being human, we all look like it, we generally act the same, different beliefs maybe being the only difference. I believe people should shut up, others believe they should constantly talk about everything they see
