Yes that has happened to me a few times. I usually either stop and not say anything until they aren't looking and continue or I tell them that it helps me feel comfortable.

It happened once to me in gym class. I was picking at the skin of my fingers because I was nervous because my gym teacher would always stop the class and scream at me when I was doing something wrong. He told me to stop fidgeting and to put my arms and hands beside my self. Also I was watching television once when I was little and I kept wigging my fingers around and my mum told me to give it a rest.

I usually don't stim in front of people anymore.

I actually can't think of any time that someone has asked what I'm doing.

I spend my time around people who are knowledgeable about autism though. I can understand how others won't have their stimming overlooked.

I regularly hear:

Why are you doing that?
Stop that, that's weird!
What's wrong?
Do you have mental problems or something? (I hear this less often though)
Are you autistic?
What's wrong with you?!
You're weird.

Whenever I stim in front of people who don't know/understand.

I sometimes get weird looks if I begin to stim in public. I never notice myself doing it at first. My most obvious is rocking or my twitches that happen. Nobody has said anything to me in a great while, probably because they know that it would be a pretty ignorant thing to do, unless they want confirmation.
