I've been remembering a lot of things from my childhood and I just remembered something in particular that now, looking back on it, is kinda interesting.

My Mom and I were at a grocery store when I was around 4. We ran into a woman and her daughter that we knew. I knew the girl but at first didn't recognize her because her hair was different from the last time i saw her. Once I realized who she was for some reason I freaked out and ran and hid in a corner. My mom couldn't get me to move until they left.
I don't know why I did it, but the major thing that stuck in my head was that she looked very different because of her new hair style.

Anyone else have childhood experiences like this. Is this a normal aspie thing?

Hi jetbuilder. I have never had an experience like this but I hear it is very common for aspies to not recognize someone they know when that person's appearance changes, even if it is a small change. I don't know about the running and hiding though.

I had an experience once when I was about 12. I had been visiting my father for a month in the summertime and when I came back and met my Mom at the airport I didn't recognize her. It was very weird - like I was meeting her for the first time.

Going off of what I was told, my grandmother tried to pick me up and hold me. I yanked out her earrings and screamed at her to GTH and that I hated her. I know I always perceived that grandmother as 'cold' but I think it must have been something with the earrings that set me off that time. Some other weird thing; helicopters freaked me out all the way to almost middle school age, whenever I heard one I would run indoors terrified. I've done the not recognizing people at the airport thing too, but I'm pretty sure every kid has a run and hide moment socially at a young age

Yes! When I was 3 1/2 years old and my mother had given birth to my brother, I stayed with my grandparents for a couple of weeks. When I was taken back home, my mother had her hair cut short and I freaked because I couldn't recognize her. I clung to my dad the next two days.
