Well I am really happy that I get to see a therapist at last (that actually comes very recommended) but in typical mirror fashion, I am fretting about it excessively and have no clue how to go about it once I get there. Should I tell him about AS? My symptoms? Will he confuse them with schizophrenia like others have? What should I do, what should I wear! (jeans and a t-shirt, its about all I ever want to wear im sure it will fall under that.

I am a little at a loss. Any comments or suggestions?

1. Make a list of your problems/symptoms ahead of time, to bring along with you, so you can show it to the doc.

2. Wear what you want.

3. Make the most of this opportunity to have your situation evaluated, by answering any questions the doc asks, as best as you can.

4. Remember that the doctor is there to help you.

First two posters: thanks for the advice, the list is a great idea.

Second Poster: Ok well I have seen about three doctors. The first one was in California, she said I had PDDNOS first, then schitzoaffective dissorder with stress seizures. When I moved I went to shreveport mental health in Louisiana and she wanted to ride iwth my prior, then sent me to be evaluated and then when the results came she said that I answered everything like I was making it up so that maybe I had depression. So I got pissed off and stormed out. Prior to this my moms doctor had wanted to see me while I was still a minor, my mom cussed her out for thinking I had a problem.

Biggest problem with my misdiagnosing is that I had had a nerveous breakdown the first time, for starters, and I am a severe mimic. I copy people's behaviors and mannerisms and expressions in order to be able to respond and I was confused and overloaded so, when they said "this is it" I started to act accordingly, even if this is not what I was feeling. That is why I am worried about the visit.

I gotta call to schedule the appointment >,<

I don't want to through water on the situation but you need to have some way to determine if the doctor is any good or a quack.

Look at Tony Attwoods book about A Complete Guide To Aspergers Syndrome. I speaks about diagnostic tests. There are many for children and many for adults. If you are not given any I would feel the Doctor is a quack. You would not get a diagnosis of Cancer without tests. Yes, Aspergers is far more subjective and much more difficult to diagnose. Especially in adults.

I just hate seeing a Psychiatrist and after 15 or 20 minutes they already have you pegged and are already writing a prescription while you babble away. Sorry, I have not had a positive experience. So I ask you, what is acceptable and what is unacceptable?

Don't elude yourself by expecting that every doctor will recognize your condition. Some doctors are f*****g stupid. I speak from experience.

If you want to get redirected to a specialist, make sure you look autistic. After that, if you are certain of your condition, you can do the same for the specialist, but in nearly all cases, that won't be a good idea. Instead, just be yourself and tell him not only the reasons why you think you're autistic, but also the symptoms you lack,, and hope it's a good specialist.

He actually comes highly recomended. I have a friend that actually does have schizophrenia and has been misdiagnosed for years, this doctor not only got the right diagnosis for him, but got him on the medication he needs to be stable. He is doing great. So, I finally chose to give him a try. My friend, I cannot stress enough how messed up he used to be, how many doctors he saw and how much of a drastic change he has made.

What do you mean by "look autistic"? Specifics would be appreciated.

Go to a doctor without your previous records and tell him your concerns. If he comes up with the same answers then perhaps you should listen. I honestly wouldn't throw out peoples opinions based on self diagnosis. Plus your moms reaction sounds fishy. If your afraid so much of being misdiagnosed as something you feel you don't want to be diagnosed as, then you should perhaps not go to the psy.

The problem is that the last doctors I went to where free goverment doctors who where on a "road to recovery" trip. Every time I went they did not wish to hear my concerns only ask me "in the road of recovery scale, where do you think you are today?" type crap, honestly. The place actually got closed down for malpractice and even for some inhumane acts such as prescribing medication and then refusing to fill it.
