In the "old" days I could go to the public library to find some real quiet space so I could zone out by myself in a darker corner somewhere and recharge my burnt out social batteries with total focus on a book or something. My local library these days, however, wants to be "everyone's living room" and it's a madhouse now.
Wow, exactly the same thing happened to me. The old central library in my city was very nice for me, there were little nooks/crannies/alcoves where you could retreat and sit down with a book, and not be bothered by anyone. In 2007, however, the central library moved to a different location and became what they call a 'mediatheque': the seats and tables are positioned in such a way that you're always in each other's face. The library says that this was done to 'improve the social experience'. There is NO SILENCE there now. Everyone is always talking and chatting, you can't read a book there anymore, you have to borrow it and take it home.
It's very, very autistic-unfriendly, and I rarely say that about anything.
