For those who don't know, Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet, and even has video streaming.
A lot of my friends have it and they say I should get it too, but I don't want to. I'm terribly shy. I hate the way my voice sounds and I don't think I'm all that attractive. Even though some of them I've actually met in real life and know how I look and sound like, it still doesn't mean that I'm comfortable with those aspects of myself. I'm not much of a talker. I find it easier to communicate through typing. Also the video thing freaks me out. It's like I have to "dress up" and put on a performance whenever there's a camera. Like I can't be myself because I know people are going to see me.
The reason I like the internet is because it's anonymous. You can be yourself without feeling too exposed. And I kinda fee like this whole Skype thing takes all that away. It just make me feel really uncomfortable.

You can still type on Skype, the video/calling parts aren't necessary for you to use it.

I too hate the way my voice sounds and I never could feel comfortable about my physical appearance. Now I know how I became permanently damaged in those two areas. It was because of how I was trained as a child into being an adult with a very poor self-esteem.

I only Skype with one person (another Aspie) and probably will never Skype with anyone else. I know this other person I Skype with is a REAL friend to me. I feel safe to be myself. Both him and I are learning how to develop our social skills by having Skype. We practice with each other and learn a lot by the experience. Most of the time, we will only use text. Sometimes we'll only use Skype's audio feature. Once a month, we use the cam along with the sound.

Skype can be like "training wheels" for learning how to get priorities in order. It's difficult to enjoy life when hating to face how you sound and/or look. If you don't have a real friend to Skype with, then maybe it's best to stay away from using it. But... if you do Skype with someone who enjoys who you are, then the experience only improves the quality of your life.

The first step is always the hardest. It gets easier and more fun over time. My friend had to be patient for awhile because I needed time to think about Skype before I could be ready to give it a try. I'm glad I now did.

We installed Skype where it's possible and use it. We have the lowest phone fee, so it's really good way to save the money.
I teached my Mum how to use Skype and she talks with family and friends (she teached some of them and she's proud :D ).
I don't understand one girl from my school - I installed her Skype and I showed how to, but she still calls me by the phone. She's really technophobic

I recently installed Skype. I like it. I mostly just do the IM-ing sort of chat, since I, too, am more comfortable with writing than talking, but I've used a video chat twice. I only have my closest friends on Skype. I don't like to talk to many people. And if you want to talk with a person on Skype but not show yourself, there's an option to call them without a video feed. I called somebody like that the other day.

I have Skype and use it only to talk with my parents but not often. I talk with mom via IM too.
My parents-in-law have Skype and they call my mother's-in-law sister and brother who are abroad and I feel very, very uncomfortable when they call in my presence. I barely know the sister and have never met the brother. They are happy to see me on the web cam, it is nice to know that but still I hate when Skype is running. I don't know what to tell them. It is terrible. I feel pressure to say something. I don't know what to talk about with people I don't know. Well, even when I know some other distant relatives I don't know what to talk about.

no, no use for it.

I just bought a laptop and purposely bought a model without a built in webcam. I am creeped out by those and the thing about people activating them remotely. Not for me.

I am a little paranoid about my web cam... 8O I turned it off and I hope nobody is able to turn it on remotely without the little light notification 8O Could it be possible?

I know what Skype is but I've never used it. I don't really have the proper equipment for it anyway, the one time my friend insisted that I do an audio/visual conversation over IM I had to set up my ps2 eyetoy and rockband microphone

I don't like talking on the phone so I don't think I'll ever bother with Skype. Not that I even have anyone to talk to on there anyway.

I also have weird paranoia about idle webcams. If I had a laptop with one I'd probably cover it with a bit of paper whenever I wasn't using it.

I have it, but so far I've only used it so my teacher can teach me Romanian.

My boyfriend covers his webcam with duct tape when he's not using it for this reason lol.

On topic: I have skype, but I never use it... I just text people I want to get in contact with.

I have skype, though I don't use it all that much. I only consistently talk to a couple of people using it. I don't give out my skype name to very many people either, I don't want the possibility of people constantly calling/video calling me. I'm as careful about giving out my skype name as I am about my cell phone number(as in, I seldom give it to anyone).

yes it's possible to activate it remotely, apparently there is a virus that is downloadable via youtube somehow that activates it, I don't know if it overrides the light, I am sure there is more going on out there than that, when I bought my computer the guy in the store told me his tech instructor told them to just cover it with tape when you are not using it if you are worried about it. I'll do without.
