I hear it mentioned often when aspergers or autism is the topic, but I'm confused as to what it means. :S Does this relate to language development and social skills, or does it encompass more things relating to the diagnosis?

I think it's a broad term for going through normal life phases and learning normal life skills at a statistically significantly delayed rate.

I've been pretty delayed, too, and have missed all the major milestones  . I am nearly sixty and feel as though I've never really reached adulthood.

Things like sitting up, turning over, crawling, walking, talking, etc, are all considered developmental milestones. There is a certain window of time for each one, and if a baby can't do that particular task by the end of that window of normal development, it is listed as a delay. Babies with delays can turn out indistinguishable from those without delays as adults.

I guess emotionally, I will always be different from other people. I didn't develop emotionally, not quickly enough and not in an acceptable way.

I am still not confident riding a bike. I always worry tripping or running someone over.

Just basically everything ending in disaster. Which is why I cannot trust people.

I got worked up about this development stuff because my psychologist asked me about it and I didn't know. And when I asked my mum about it, I wondered whether she was being honest. Because I MUST have been a late developer and if my mother did not notice it...

I don't know. I try not to worry about it as much now.

But I always felt a bit left behind. Because it takes me a long time to become confident in something.

I was late too social wise and language and communication. My mom says I walked lat too but I think 14 months is normal. My brother walked late however due to his body size. He was never really developmental delayed. My emotions have always been immature too.

I feel like I'm about 20-25 in some ways. Doesn't help that I look it, too.

There are days that I feel like I'm 16.
