I just first saw this term in a thread and thought it was the perfect example of how I sometimes search for responses to confusing questions. (For those who don't know, a Rolodex is a set of index cards on a little wheel that you can spin through, used for things like Contact lists and such).

My own interpretation was like that used in The Terminator, when the hotel owner asked through the door what smelled so bad. It showed a POV screen with a list of responses for the T-800 to make. The choices individually highlight, and are examined or passed by. Sometimes I'm tempted to choose the same one he did.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a mental version of a Rolodex file for most responses. :D

WOW, I think I was reading the same thread as you (What's the right answer to "how are you?")
and i was picturing that same thing with the Terminator in the hotel room because that is a really good example of how my brain works with everything. I have to scroll through set phrases and choose one for every response.

I can think of many times when someone asks me something, or states something which normally suggests I say something back, that I am at a loss for words. These are part of those awkward moments that I think many of us get in life. Often times it is part of the chit chat that many of us Aspies do not like. I think the idea of a Rolodex, or other related helper, is a great idea where we have a pool of appropriate responses to choose from. Of course I cannot imagine carrying around such a device and flipping through it while I talk, but having these responses memorized into a sort of mental Rolodex would work for me.
