I'm writing a book about my experiences with Autism but I need help with topics and stuff. So I was wondering if you've ever had any experiences where people ask you questions about your autism and what they are. They can be positive and negative... doesn't matter. I'll try to use them in my novel about myself and be sure to give wrong planet credit for helping. :)

NTs can also contribute, especially if you've always had a few questions you've wanted to ask about autism. In fact, NTs are GREATLY welcome to contribute.

The top five questions I am asked most frequently (in this exact order) are:

5. Are you diagnosed?
4. Don't you have trouble planning your day?
3. How smart are you, then?
2. What are your weird habits?
1. You don't seem to have Asperger Syndrome?

The first one is always asked as if it were, in fact, a question.

"What's that actually mean?"

The most common statement tends to be, however, "Well that explains a few things."

I might not use the last one as AS but it does seem more like something people would ask, especially when I do function normally. It sucks when you border on having a high functioning form of autism and classic autism. D: My therapist even agrees that I do because my mental capacity is low when it comes to verbal, social and emotional expression. >_<

One person said she didn't know what me having Asperger's meant, since I have empathy. So, maybe a question version of that might be, "Can people with Autism have empathy?"

GOOD IDEA. I've been wanting to write about that, especially being an empath.

Why do you stim? (They actually ask about the particular stim I do, but I don't really want to share it)

Are you good at math?

What? That didn't hurt? How can that not hurt? (I am hypo sensitive to pain, some aspies may have the opposite problem who are hypersensitive to it; it can go either way)

Aren't you sensitive to noise?

Do you like animals?

Do you take medication?

Why don't you eat chicken? (This is related to AS because I used to eat chicken a lot when I was little and then developed a sensory issue around it, I am serious, it is always chicken for some reason). It should be noted that I avoid food-related conversations because I always end up getting asked why I don't eat certain foods.

I once got asked why I don't take medication, but that was in relation to OCD, not AS.

Do you really have autism? My (random person) has autism and he doesnt even talk.

So... You're ret*d?

Is that why you're smart then?

Is that like a psycopath?

Haha a** burgers. (not a question, but still one of the most common responses I get...)

'Why don't you try to get on disability?" - I think this is the question I get the most often, and my response is (as I've mentioned before on here) that I wouldn't be considered "disabled" enough to qualify.

Not a question; but I did have once someone say I don't have AS. Um, she's not medically trained and it's a spectrum disorder; not everyone will be the same.

I always get asked if I'm on drugs, and I always get asked how old I am.

I see I'm not the only one getting silly questions, so why not.

'What do you wanna do about it?' - you know, as if I can cancel it at at will.
'So what? Did I ever interfere with it?' - Someone - I won't say who - who took it as an insult.

I get asked why I'm so shy alot. I'm not really that shy. I just like my space. Being around people makes me feel awkward. I also get asked, usually by older people that know me, if I have a girlfriend. No I don't. I'm just not interested.

I've had the opposite - it's the younger people who ask why. I mentioned this to an older friend last week. She says I'm being sensible.

I get talked to as if I don't have someone, even though I kind of do. I never 'got' it. It's like whatever I do manage to do socially goes completely unnoticed.

"ARE YOU STONED?" - when really, I don't even do drugs at all, except for the meds.

"ARE YOU ON DRUGS?" - I guess that's sort of the same question as above.

"WHY ARE YOU SO WEIRD?" - because you are so NT.

"WHY ARE YOU SO RANDOM?" - that's a popular one.

"I WONDER WHAT GOES ON IN YOUR MIND". evil!
