You sound exactly like me at your age (except for the national accent, of course.) Unfortunately I don't really have any advice to offer. I predate ASD as a diagnosis, never got any help, and if I speak more clearly now it's happened gradually, over the course of decades.

Surely more support is available now though. Since you have a diagnosis, are you not eligible for some kind of speech therapy?

i would not want to go down that route as it would be embarrassing.
any self-help tips?

I would get professional speech therapy before you potenceally age out and have to pay, its really no big deal and I think a lot of pro singers and people like that use simular stay in top form. I had it in the first or second grade and i'm having to re-teach some of it over again to myself and thankfully I can remember most of the concepts used to do it. Whats worse, your speech issues or going to therapy? Its not like you are hiding it from people already.

If you think its a problem, I would definitely go to a speech therapist.
I have a speech problem and have never done anything about it. Most of the time I am embarrassed by it. So I have to choose my words carefully to hide it, or just not talk at all.

On the other hand, if it doesn't bother you, then it shouldn't be a problem.
My brother and cousin talk like me and they do nothing to hide it.
Sometimes I wish I didn't worry so much about it.

I do those things a lot too. The only thing that ever helped with me is speaking more formally or academically. It's easier to get my words out, but it poses problems of it's own, and sometimes rubs people the wrong way. It's either my speech is confusing and garbled and they think I'm an idiot, or it's overly professional and they think I'm putting on airs. Can't win.

I have the same thing. But only if I am nervous or uncomfortable. And when people are going to finish my sentences, because I get stuck at one word it only gets words.

But I can't give you any advice, sorry.

My words come out all jumbled up but usually people don't really say anything.

Use a cork!

Stick a cork between your teeth and pronounce things verrry slowly and clearly. Exaggerate every single sound. It develops your muscles and coordination. If you look in books for actors you may find some vocal exercises you can do to develop your enunciation.

e.g.
Gudda . . . Budda (said four times, then rest jaw)
Budda . . . Gudda
Peachy . . . Weachy
Weachy . . . Peachy
Peachy . . . Neachy
Neachy . . . Peachy
Lip . . . Sips; Feh . . . Smah; TTT . . . DDD; PPP . . . BBB; GGG . . . KKK

You can also go over a text before reading it normally and rehearse every syllable very slowly first with the cork.

You may be able to buy a new cork at a wine store for very little (get one made of cork), or if not, you can find bags of them for not too much money at wine making stores.

The only thing with corking is you really do need to take it out between phrases to give your jaw a rest. And at first, your muscles will be sore. But it gets easier. (Of course, if you stop doing the exercises, you lose it again, unless you talk more and maintain it that way.)

Pick out the words and sounds you have trouble with and practice the sylibles by themselves then slowly re-form them into words and record yourself now and then to hear what is actually coming out. Watch your tounge, when it passes through your teeth and hits your teeth the sound grounds out, I now notice this and correct it mid speech to remind my brain to not do that. The tounge is at the centre of most speech issues I think so pay attention to it. All this applys to myself anyway, things I did with my ST as a kid and I am having to do again when no ones home to eliminate or more likely lessen my bad lisp to something more consistant and clear.

You really should go to a speech therapist and at least get evaluated and consalt or whatever they do so you know what exactly your challanges are so you will know doing at home. I would have loved to go back now for more however the cutoff for goverment funded ST here is 17 years old and i'm 23. Thats why I said do it while it may be refundable, don't skip out and regret it later. Like I said I do know what the therapist did with me and my issues are mostly the same so thereore I have a good idea of what I am doing. Do you understand what I am trying to say?
