I'm sure this topic (sensory overload) has been breached before, and many times at that. However, I feel like b*tching (can I say that here?...) about my retardedly sensitive skin.

It's not overly sensitive to chemicals / perfumes; I don't suffer from bad acne; even rashes are pretty rare for me. It's not overly pale, thin or abnormal in any physical way, but it's weird.

For one thing, I cannot rub it on anything even remotely textured (especially my palms and fingertips). If I do accidentally, I get chills all over, sometimes even twitches, and if I'm doing something, I won't be able to continue (for example, if I'm talking, I'll stop mid-sentence) because it's much too distracting.
If I even see someone rubbing their hands on their jeans (ew... toes curling..) it distracts me... I can almost feel it.

Also, if it's dry, my skin can't even stand the feel of itself... touching my fingers to my palm when it's dry just gives me the creeps, and I have never been able to properly moisturize my feet because they're so rough, and they're so rough cuz I can't moisturize them (poor me!)

Ok, I've made myself smile (or at least shake my head a little) about it, it's out of my system. Anyone else have any weird sensory-overload issues the need to b*tch about? :)

That sounds like synesthesia. I have a bit of that. But not so much with my sense of touch.

I'm sensitive to pain, which makes me afraid to go to the doctors.

I can't stand touching really dry stuff, like hard crisp material and stuff.

I can't stand lotions and creams (probably why my skin is dry) and waslking inside in bare feet that have been outside is an absolute nightmare. I always head straight to the shower and wash my feet if they have been walking around outside.

There are no words in any language to describe how horrible that feels to me. If something is extremely smooth, I can rub it for a few seconds before it becomes torture.

i dont like lotion either, or deoderant. (yes i stink) i just dont like anything under my arms or on my skin. the only thing i will put on my skin for occasional dryness is aloe vera, the real stuff. it doesnt really make me feel like i have nasty layer on my skin if i dont put it on too thick

I have very ,very dry skin.I can not stand to have any roughness on my hands or feet....so I file them.
I use one of those large footshape wooden files on my feet, several times a week and then when they are totally smooth, slather with L,Bri(has aloe in it).I do the same with my hands.I dont like lotion but I hate rough skin,it's a trade off.As far as having to touch rough textures....it is a little easier if I apply alot of pressure...it's the light touch that seems to give me the creepy feeling.Sythetic fabrics are a nightmare to touch...I used to have to do my family laundry and my mom and dad had a lot of polyester...yuck!! !

So why pick words like "retardedly sensitive skin"? I HAVE a similar feeling, but figured it is normal. My tweaked senses are primarily vision and hearing, and a bit smell and taste. I never figured touch would be tweaked also. I guess it makes sense(no pun intended).

I can't stand rubbing the edge on a quarter, for example. And it is odd. They USED to do that with precious metal coins because some would shave off the metal, and sell it for more money. TODAY, it is nestalgiac at best.

I also don't like rubbing on some pants, or some really dry items.

I guess I am lucky I don't mind the deoderant problem. I used to NEED the aluminum products, but I try to limit aluminum because of things like alzheimers.

Is it something you can tune out, get used to, or avoid, like I do?

Steve

Cool!

My friends and co-workers find it really weird, and sometimes I think they get a kick out of seeing me cringe when they rub their hands on something... they seem to think it's funny. But it's nice to know I'm not the only one.

I have a problem withstanding sh*tty music.

Put me in a restaurant or a department store or something where they're playing smooth jazz, Nashville pop country, cliched badly done downtempo electronica (I love the good stuff), whiny emo-core that's trendy these days on rock radio, or 70s/80s soft rock, and I'll be balling up my fists and grinding my teeth.

People think I'm a music snob, but it seriously gets to me, as in... a physiological reaction.

I also hate being in loud places UNLESS it's to see a live band. Loud music over the PA where you have to scream in the person's ear really really sucks. I truly hate places like that.

Also, if I'm at a party where I don't know most of the people, or where it's not my kind of crowd... I'll get extremely ansy and have to run outta the room.

Eh, have you been channeling my thoughts? I really dislike the "pooling of oil" feeling I get when I use lotions. It's like they don't absorb quickly enough, or I get the feeling that I've dropped my body in a vat of oil.

I have the same issue with the feet too. If I wear sandals, my feet feel like they've been caked in dirt.

I'd use deodorant/antiperspirant if it didn't give me hives. I really do need it.

HAHAHAHA, I can't shop in the grocery store while they're playing country music. It's somehow, uh, less appetizing? No, seriously, I understand where you're coming from.

Yeah, that's why I hate Wal-Mart on the weekends, they're always screaming stuff over the PA system.

I can't stand being sticky. When I was little my mum used to keep a damp flannel on a low-down hook in the kitchen for me to wipe my hands/face/whatever on because of this. I used it all the time!

I have more of a problem with clothing. I try to wear a shirt as little as possible around the house. And only a few shirts feel comfortable on me.

I hate being sticky, it drives me insane and I have never liked it. There is a picture of me as a baby where my dad smothered my face in chocolate because he wanted the 'cute messy baby' photo but instead I just screamed so the pic is of my crying. My mum told me that I was a very clean baby.

My skin is sensative and I can only have a certain type of washing powder for my clothes or I will come out in a rash, also a certain type of soap. I think the thing that irritates me most about clothes is not how they feel but the label, I have to cut all the labels out of my clothes otherwise they really annoy me.

DrowningMedusa, I think it's mean what you coworkers do, if only they knew how it felt huh.

My big issue is newspaper. I hate touching it, and if someone folds or rustles it too close to me, it gives me cold shivers down my spine - I can almost feel it on my skin from the sound.

I generally hate any kind of dry, dusty feel on my skin.
