Possible sensory issue in class.
I've been out of school for around 9 years and just recently went back. Something that I've been noticing in my classes is that when I am reading my text book, it will appear like there are strobe lights flashing onto my book. This makes it very hard to read and makes me a little dizzy. I think this has to do with the lighting in the classrooms. Very disturbing. I do not remember this happening when I was younger.
Anyone have this problem? I have no headache when this happens, so I don't think it's migraine related although I guess it's still possible.

Sort of. I've always hated fluorescent lights because they are too bright and hurt my eyes in general, though I've never had the strobe-light effect. My biggest problem though is noise. Even very small unexpected sounds that wouldn't bother any of my NT friends scare me out of my skin (which of course they have to playfully exploit and tease me for), and this semester, I have a teacher who gets very loud when he's excited -- which is frequently -- to the point where he's almost yelling, and that painfully excessive noise, while not apparently bothering anyone else, makes it very hard to concentrate and causes a fair bit of pain.

Thanks to Olympiadis for my fantastic avatar!
I hear the buzzing of faulty ballasts, some people see the light flickering. Has to get a bit worse for me to see the light flickering.
None of the lights in UK do it. They all got upgraded. Only bad quality or old ball bearing ones do it.
Same with faulty Dc motors. NO one else can hear it. I know its the motor because another does not make the noise. Same with the LED Dc lights some of them buzz too. Also DC plugs.

Let us first understand the basic concepts of strobe.
It was found that long to read under fluorescent lights will feel uncomfortable, although its brightness and the day is no different. Why is this? After the study, to realize that this is because the fluorescent light intensity is due to changes over time. Is due to light flicker.
Flashing light on the human visual system stimulation, will produce discomfort. The long-flashing light in the work or life, but also may affect the visual system of physical health and mental health. This stimulating effect or influence the severity of light flicker and the intensity, frequency, time, and the continuing role of long-term related. This effect is often slow, so long did not arouse attention. However, with the rapid development of e-people exchanges during the day under fluorescent lights and the monitor screen before the work; at night in the AC and the TV screen under fluorescent light before the life, and even accompanied by the vertigo chaos flooded the art of light, so light flashes on the visual system impact of increasingly prominent.
In particular, the stroboscopic effect of electric light, to human production, daily life, causing serious health hazards. Mainly in the following areas:
1, the illusion caused by industrial accidents: the electric light of the strobe frequency, and movement (rotation) of objects velocity (speed) as integer multiples of the relationship. Movement (rotation) motion of objects (rotating) state, it will produce a still, reverse, movement (rotation) speed is slow, and the above error periodically repeated three states vision, cause accidents. For example, the machining industry, Machine Operators, on the forward rotation of the lathe tool, the illusion is reversed. While for urgent change to the operation, damage to the workpiece, tool, fraudulent claims casualties.
2, hazardous to their health and affect: stroboscopic effect will cause visual fatigue, migraine headaches. Machinery industry in particular, high pressure mercury (sodium) light, and light industry, food, printing, electronics, textiles and other industries, generally a straight tube (inductive) occasions, especially fluorescent lighting. For example, plug-operatives on the assembly line, susceptible to visual fatigue, blurred vision, cause migraines. Generating positioning difficult situation, the production efficiency is low.
3 hurt young people's eyes, resulting in myopia. In our country 80 years later, straight type (inductive) fluorescent lamps, commonly used in homes, schools, libraries, growing primary and secondary victims of a great, significant vision loss, myopia increased significantly.

The buzzing, humming, and flickering from the lights, the people around me moving and writing/typing, the sounds outside, and the noises in the other rooms bother me and sometimes I have to leave the room because of the over-stimulation. With the lights, I definitely know what you mean. It almost feels like my vision (and my head starts to spin, so I feel confused) becomes bad when they're shining on the book. I don't use a book in class anymore; I only take handwritten notes on my android tablet (Lenovo Thinkpad) now. It's actually helped quite a bit. Not to mention that I never run out of paper. Maybe just take notes but not in the book? Unless that's your main way of learning. I'm in college, too, by the way. I remember high school was the same as now.
i get this too; the basic fluorescent lights used in offices and classrooms have such a frequency that it is a true strobe if i dont look straight at them, becouse there are several in the room usually, there is always one in the corner of my eyes :S
largely due to this, i struggle to survive for much longer then 2 hours of lecture or meeting in a row, or 4 hours in all...
Ya I'm like that to. You might benefit from Irlen syndrome glasses. I'm currently trying to get to the doctor where I live that tests that. If you don't know what Irlen syndrome is here's a link to where you can send in a test and see info on it:

I don't have as many problems with lights, but I do have a multitude of problems with the air conditioning in most of the buildings in my school. We're in the middle of the desert and there's no way around using it, but that doesn't mean that it has to be so awful! The vents are always whistling or clanking or shuddering or buzzing or making some other kind of horrible racket. The same thing happens in the colder months when they turn on the heat, although it's so bad in the summertime that even most of the NTs notice it.
I think the reason I don't have problems with lights is that I can't hear them over the rest of the noise.
