If anybody has this problem, how do you cope with it?

I've found some cool silicone earplugs that I can hear 50% of sound through but effectively block the sounds that bother me - fluorescent light sounds, tv's when on, screeching brakes, etc.

Let me know if you want to know where I get them, and PM me. I don't want this to look like an advertisement.

I just get used to it.

I constantly hear a high pitched ringing sound wherever I go...I can't hide from it! I've just gotten used to it.

Yeah that's called Tinnitus, and I have a mild case of it too. I don't hear it during the day usually, it's more noticable in quiet situations like when I'm trying to go to sleep.

I get it every once in awhile. Unfortunately, what you're 'hearing' is the sound of some of your actual hearing going.

Those noises don't bother me. The noise of people talking is what bothers me (the sight of people too).

I cannot cope with my sensitivity other than turning my MP3 player up and enduring the pain until it becomes too much and I run away; sedatives help if I need to stay around as they dampen one's senses.

If I were completely blind and deaf, I'd be in more comfort, but that has its own trade-offs.

Loud noises (certain ones) and babies crying - I can't stand those sounds!! I try to distract myself by looking somewhere else or trying to play music in my head to deter myself. Another problem I have is repeating beeps or if something is off pitch. Auugh!

At work I cant stand when a pallet falls onto the floor, the loud bang makes me cover my ears everytime.'

I also cant stand when people beep constantly, both in their cars or at work when driving a forklift or tugger or whatever, its loud, abnoxious, annoying and freaks me out almost everytime.

I have a problem with some computer screens and with some fluorescent lights. One day I spent half an hour on my work to trace a beeping monitor. I was getting head aches and could not concentrate anymore.

It is a bit strange, because most people above 21 do not hear high pitched sounds anymore.

I have a problem with sounds that have a loud attack (the first part of the sound), and with the noise of lots of people. I deal with it by cringing, lowering my head and covering my ears. It helps somewhat. I'm still in pain, but not overwhelmingly so. My mp3 player has a set of headphones that go over the ears and they are fantastic for shutting noise out. The first time I wore them in public, on a crowded train, I fell in love with them.

OMG!! !

THANK YOU!!

God, this is my pet hate right now. All I can hear, all day every day, is noises. I'm forever switching things off at the wall because, and I'm not exaggerating here:

The computer monitor buzzes and clicks
The TV squeals
The VCR squeals
The DVD player buzzes
The Sky box buzzes
The dishwasher is the worst of all - it squeals LOUDLY and vibrates too!! ARghghghghghg I hate it
The washing machine squeals
The lights all hum and/or squeal
My laptop hums
There's a gas meter behind my wall that makes weird high-pitched noises intermittantly all night
My phone charger squeals
The microwave buzzes AND squeals
The card reader squeals
My MP3 player squeals

Car brakes make me just about flinch

I don't know why I'm so sensitive to it lately but I'm driving everyone mad turning things off and whinging about it and getting pissed off and storming out of rooms because I can't handle it. It's the worst thing ever, and what annoys me most is people saying "Well I have extremely good hearing and I can't hear a thing, you're just making it up, don't be so ridiculous"...! !! !! !

I interrupted a meeting not long ago because the alarm system (on standby as we were there, obviously) was driving me so mad with this high pitched frequency I kept getting whenever I moved my head in a certain direction that I couldn't stand it and had to trace the sound. I ended up on the phone to the company getting them to temporarily disable it. Nobody at work except one of my colleagues knows I'm aspergic, but I think a few might be wondering after that episode...! ! I put it down to 'super sensitive hearing thanks to being a gigging musician", hopefully they bought it.

It also got some strange looks from my colleagues, only one other person could hear it faintly... I blamed it on a problem with headaches resulting from bad air on the office.

I was quite thoroughly searching by switching things off etc. Luckily I found it, otherwise I probably would have moved my desk to another room.

I've taken to just sitting with my mp3 player on all day now, the noise bothers me so much. I can still hear it as it's such a high frequency, but it's not as irritating. Sigur Rós is my band of choice... not overly distracting from work, but it's just something there to take the sound away. I work in a media office so you can imagine all the various squealing machines - one wall is entirely covered in TVs, DVD players, speakers, radios, stereos, recorders, burners, mixers, etc... ugh. If I'm the only one in the office I turn all the lights off and flip one of the fuses that one of the electricians told me controls the media area - haven't had a problem with said fuse yet, so I assume that's all it's in charge of. :D

I can deal with high pitched sounds.

However, LOUD sounds kind of bowl me over. I have a much harder time dealing with sudden loud sounds. Kinda makes me crazy.

For instance, if a smoke alarm goes off (Like when I burn something on the stove), I just go crazy. A few times in the past I have grabbed a broom handle and just knocked them damn thing off the wall rather than carefully waft the smoke away from the sensor. I just smash the damn thing and have to end up buying a new one.

I can't stand the ticking of a clock! It drives me CRAZY! Luckily I have earplug when I go to sleep, otherwise I would go crazy. In most other situations, I make enough noise to cover the evil ticking sound, but there are times where I want to smash my clock into tiny bits.
