I was just wondering if anyone here has ever taken on a new stim, such as hand-flapping (or a form of such), where previously they've only had more subtle stims. I'm a rocker/swayer. I also move my legs/feet a lot when I'm sitting. I drum my fingers, on occasion. But I've never been one to flap. And today, I'm noticing some slight twist/flapping motions I'm doing while sitting here at work. It doesn't last long, only a second or two. But that's probably because I stop when I realize I'm doing it. Anyone else??

Yes. I've always been rocking, moving my feet/toes when I sit down and rubbing the skin above my left eyebrow. Recently I've started to rub my hands though.

Interesting - I've just started doing this over the last few months, along with my preexisting clapping this must be kind of annoying for my office mates...

i flap my arms and hop on my toes. and i make claw-like fingers and twist my hands. i tighten my muscles; i call it "the squeeze". these are just some of the things i do.

i also make some sounds like a burp and a loud squeak.

i also stretch alot. part of "the squeeze" i think.

Yeah, I don't know why I've started doing it. I think it was quite voluntary in the beginning. And it felt good so I kept doing it. Less voluntary now though.

Funny, I do that, too. Didn't have a name for it, though.

I never used to rock or flap before joining WrongPlanet. I guess that reading about it put the idea in my brain and that's why I began to do it. Kind of annoying, really. It's if somebody says, "Don't think about elephants" - even if you weren't thinking about them before, you are now.

Recently I've begun shaking and twisting my hands. I think it started with a motion I use when there is something on or brushing against my hand that is annoying me, and it has kinda stuck, but if I put my hands down by my side first nobody seems to notice.

I used to rock from early childhood on, but I never flapped my hands. After reading about hand flapping in AS, I caught myself doing a hand flap from time to time. It's really nice, I enjoy it a lot...

Before I heard about AS I used to have the sensation I was rocking back and forth. it was very subtle, I guess so subtle that no one noticed.
Since I learned about AS and joined WP, I've noticed that I'm doing it more.

I am not sure how long I have done it. My husband has pointed it out and my mother one time. My husband calls it shaking my hands. I don't do it all the time, he says I for it when i get excited and my mother told me I did that when I got stressed out and felt scared and it was over furniture because i though it be too much for my apartment.

I also notice I rock back and forth and wring my hands twist my fingers and flap my arms and I jump up and down when excited. I also bounce my legs or tap my feet or drum my fingers.

Is it possible that you just became aware of it, when you joined WP? :chin:

That's possible, too. I've become aware of several things I do since learning and reading about AS.

I don't think I flap my hands. I don't really know what that looks like sure. It has been pointed out to me that when I am upset I will put up my spread out hands near the side of my head. I guess, something like that, not perfectly sure right now. But that is not new.

The last couple months in the morning and evenings I have been singing variations on some lyrics I made up somehow, not sure how. I don't know why it changed but it feels good. Before this I would it not last as long and I would be making statements I liked stating, and these sort of questions, but they are not really questions. I will stop when I am told its too much, but then I forget and start up again, and sometimes feel bad about it. I am also told its funny so its not like I am being a jerk. Plus, it just comes out of me and I have to try and hold such things in when outside of home too.

I don't flap my hands, because my wrists tend to pop, and it's not comfortable. However, I rub my lips, my eyebrows, I press and rub my ears, I bite my lip, peel my fingernails, play with my nose, take in deep sighs, and stretch out my fingers/hand.
