That's a real knot of a problem. Generally, questioning someone's motivation is questioning their honesty and most folks, especially ones holding authority, don't much care for that.
Some people get away with it by acting stupid when they make inquiries, but that kind of acting ability strikes me as worse than simply getting a hassle going.
