Something I do to get interested in conversations is to analyse through a personal interest. For example, I am interested in colors. So if someone talk about clothes, I will try to know what are the colors. Same could be done about cars or about anything with color. I am also interested in economics. You can easily the link with economic questions when someone talks about buying and working. In fact, you can fill many conversations with special interests without imposing it. Just it is your manner to see that thing. Of course, this may not work if there are too many people that follow mental patterns linked to the subject. In this case, I have a tendency to be sad to be out, but well I just don't like some topics, so I don't get involved. Most of the time, it is ok. You are not obliged to participate to any discussion. You can stay there and think of something else, or go away. I someone ask you a question, you can play with this by say "oh cool I have got some attention, what could I say" and then say anything you like. They will see you as a clown, but it is ok.

Hmm, well I find sports talk boring, especially golf talk.
I guess you can try to find if there are prime numbers in the scores...

And I love kids but I hate when I am talking to someone who has kids and that's ALL they talk about.
Oh yes, this can be deadly boring.

Its boring when women talk about what he/she said. I sense tension in gossipy type conversations and it makes me uneasy.
This terrible because it forces you indirectly to think in social terms.
