Facebook helps me trick myself into thinking I'm socializing.
Really, I'm just as tongue tied and awkward there as I am in real life, but at least the medium of computer has less social anxiety attached to it, so I "say" things I might otherwise not say in person.
There are different challenges to communicating over the computer. For example, in real life I say something awkward and people end the conversation. On facebook chat, I say something awkward and the person responds with "lol" which always throws me for a loop, because what the hell does lol mean? (I know what it stands for. That's different from what it means.)
I read an article somewhere that facebook makes you feel like everyone has a better social life than you, because everyone is always posting pics of doing this or doing that. I can see that - I see the people I have friended having parties or going out, and then there's me.
I can't get rid of my facebook though. I really do feel more socially connected with it, however illusionary that might be. Also, I manage publicity for my university choir so I need to manage their facebook page.
