I don't have floating sensations during my waking hours except for those times I was on zero gravity flights where I really was floating around. However, I do have some really strange sensations after usin an elavator. When I get off the elevator, I feel like an earthquake is occuring. This happens everytime I use one. And the sensation stays with me for a few days. I feel it the most once I lay down to go to bed and still very much awake. It feels like the whole bed is moving. Although elevators are nice to ride on, I hate what comes afterwords.

But, to answer your question, I would think it is a sensory thing that may somehow affects the brain which is sending you false signals. It is like when I was on the zero gravity flights, I loss all my senses as far as what position I was in, not sensing direction and my eyes were showing me one thing, but my brain was telling me something else. A person would have to experience this to know what I'm talking about. Zero gravity flights really screws with the brain.

I used to work overnights and sometimes, near the end of the night, when walking, I would feel so deliriously tired that I would sort of feel that way. Or even like I was swimming.

It's possible that it is a sensory issue. However, it could also be a circulation or other health issue. If you have circulation problems from sitting for prolonged periods this might happen. You may not even have realized that you have such a problem until you look into the floating issue. Either cause can be relieved by getting up and walking around for a few minutes whenever it happens. If that doesn't fix it, see a vascular doctor. Also have your blood pressure and blood sugar checked. And if there is nothing wrong, you may want to see a neurologist, as there may be a neurological problem, such as a tumor, or mini stroke, etc.

So get yourself checked out for safety's sake. :)

I used to have that sensation all the time as a kid. I don't now, though--too many aches and pains.

When I sit in a very loud or busy place, sometimes it seems like I float a little, and aren't quite here or there. In this case, I think my sensations are caused by being overstimulated by everything around me. It doesn't really bother me though, if anything i find it relaxing.

I thought for almost an entire year that I could hover because I was having super-realistic recurring dreams about it and when I woke up I still had the lingering sensation and the thought that if I focused enough on believing in it, I could do it. Oh and I was 21 or 22 at the time.

I never hovered though. Gave it my all.

Also, when it's super quiet, I hear a loud BEEEEEEP until regular sounds happen again.

When I was a kid, I really identified with the Sesame Street song "How do I Know I'm Here?". I couldn't find the lyrics to it, but it goes something like: How do I know I'm here/Am I standing on the ground?/How do I know I'm not in outer space/ somewhere where I can't be found?

So it's not a floating sensation I get, but I feel like my senses are the only things keeping me here in the moment. It's very difficult to describe. I feel like I have to be touching something or feel pressure on my skin to know that I am here.

I get this too, and did some research. From what I found this happens to a lot of people. Its because your brain isnt getting any input from you ears, so it increases the sensitivity. So that would be all the little sounds you never normally hear, like blood going through your ears. Kinda like when people stare at a blank color for a long time and start to hallucinate because of lack of input to the brain.

Yes and it's creepy as hell because its like I'm like above my body or something I'm not but it feels like it because I feel all floaty and detatched and can't make much use of my body unless i concentrate really hard and then it takes a minute....sucks when it happens on the bus, I've missed my stop because of it before. I remember when I was a kid I had some intresting ideas as to what caused this feeling, they all sound insane so I won't bother posting them.

Yep. I can feel like I'm out of my body looking down at it. Probably from seizures. I also feel like static objects are moving when the camera on a TV show or movie pans across. Either I'm moving or the whole room is moving.

I've gotten that floating feeling a few times. I got that way when my family went to New York City for vacation when I was 14--I spent a good portion of the first day there feeling that way. I sometimes get it when I feel an anxiety attack coming on, too.

What's more common for me, though, is a general semi-dizzy out-of-it feeling that I get sometimes if I'm overstimulated by my surroundings.
