I almost never use exclamations or smileys when I write. If something exciting happens, I never use exclamations - it just feels weird to - it certainly doesn't feel like I'm writing in my voice when I do it.

I use them very sparingly and when I feel it appropriate. I knew one UnDx Aspie who underlined everything he wrote and added a minimum of 3 exclamations

I like using smileys on forums, but I don't often write with '!'s when I handwritte or text. I also like smileys because here you can click and *click* :D they look the same every time. That is nice, and the harder to understand ones have the emotion so you are sure it's what you mean.

I met a severely autistic person on an online RPG who used smilies after every sentence, he said it was to "tell" people what he means when he types. I do it as well sometimes, because I find text difficult to communicate sometimes. It's far better than real life, though, where there are no smilies available, just words and expressions...

I don't use very many smiley's either nor exclamations.

I only use smileys if I am confused or being funny or not trying to sound mean so it won't be taken the wrong way. I don't even see myself typing ! !! !! and I rarely type in caps.

I rarely use either unless emphasis is needed. Otherwise I feel that they make my writing look too juvenile.

I've consciously chosen to use more smileys. I sometimes use exclamation marks for hopefully comedic effect, but I tend to stick to periods.

"Hurry up!" she shouted. "He's coming this way!"

or "Hurry up," she shouted, "he's coming this way."

The exclamation point makes a difference, no?

I overly use them when I am talking people. I put them after almost ever sentence for the same reasons as the person said above. Sometimes I have to remove some from blogs or emails because there are so many smileys and stuff.

I have a degree in language from a university which required many linguistics classes for that degree - I know a lot about exclamation marks and their purpose - I just rarely ever use them, and I notice many people, particularly NTs, using them fairly often.

I use them if they seem warranted. Often, they do not seem warranted in the least.

Usually, when I'm writing casually (with my close online friends or on forums), I use an abundance of emoticons and exclamation points. I also do it to show what I really mean, and I expect my friends to do it so I can interpret them correctly, particularly with sarcasm. However, for whatever ironic reason, so few people on here use emoticons. I would think that this forum would be overflowing with emoticons for lack of social cues. But since others don't use them, I rarely use them on here, either, which is why I believe that many of my posts are viewed as stilted and argumentative. When I don't feel allowed to use emoticons for whatever reason, that just naturally turns my writing into formal, and my formal writing is overly formal and stilted.

In casual conversations I use massive quantities of emoticons, almost one per message. :P

It's a hard habit to break, and it doesn't really bother anybody, so I'll probably continue with it.

Exclamation points, on the other hand, I almost never use. Ever.

I used emoticons for the first time a few days ago in a post.
Its just not on my radar screen to think of using them.
I grew up using typewriters.
