Why should I say my name when the teacher is reading and calling up the class and seeing that I sit there, if he sees my why should I say my name?

Is it some kind of disciplinary ritual or a showing of contact to the peers and or teacher...

Do you mean, she's staring at you and you still have to say, "Here?" If so, I can't tell you. It's a NT rule. If everyone HAS to answer, so do you, even though she knows you're there. Just do it. I've always found that sort of amusing

I think that's what he means. It is a pre-established ritual I assume, does it really matter? It is the way it is.

My teachers generally don't bother to wait until I've barked "here" to take down my name once they've talked to me or seen me that day. This is possibly because half the time I just go "huh?" or "mm?" when roll is taken because I'm reading and not paying attention to roll.

I have another idea,

respond with "here" but each day use a slightly weird tone, sometimes very weird, if it annoys her stop obviously, but otherwise she might even start looking and writing your name in without asking because she gets embarrassed or something?

Just a weird theory, don't know if would actually work.

I used to respond with "here" in a different language every day.

But generally Ive always thought it was because the teacher was lazy and didnt want to have to keep looking back and forth from the sheet to the room.

If its rollcall and they just look to see if you're there in your spot, confusion may spark if someone else is there.. thats all i got

Maybe it also covers up the fact that there's some children they don't know.

I remember as a kid I used to yodel instead of say 'here' for the roll, because I KNEW people thought it was weird, and I wanted to be a bit weird and different. Oddly enough, I've found seven years later that I don't really have to try!

It's just what's expected. I don't always say "here" when they call roll, but I do raise my hand so they can see me. It's just a way of being able to hear you when they can't see you, and see you when they can't hear you. I guess.
