So I'm pretty excited, Asperger's/autism is one of my special interests, and today my abnormal psych teacher (who knows I have AS) asked if I would help her present the material for the pervasive developmental disorder unit we're doing after Thanksgiving break because she knew I knew a lot about the topic. I get to teach everyone about AS and autism, and even though I usually dread presentations, I'm actually excited for this one, it's an Aspie's dream come true; someone is asking me to stand up and monologue about my special interest, and I have a captive audience! :D What sorts of things would you guys want to teach a class about?

I would love to teach an Intro to Physics or Circuits I class. That would be nice.

Emphasize the fact that many (most?) of us can lead normal, productive lives, and that the stereotype of a maladaptive, anti-social nerd with poor hygiene and an intense musical and/or mathematical talent is more the exception, rather than the rule of Aspie life.

That stereotype is my wonderful son, I'll have you know. And he had a great job as programmer for video games until he came down with ankylosing spondylitis and the pain and medication brought down his productivity. He now does quality control at much less pay and a foundation pays for his meds. He got a girlfriend at age 32! Woohoo!
Anyway, I tend to monologue about Rwanda.

I would love to teach a class about either tigers or basketball. That's pretty exciting that your teacher is including you and letting you present info about Autism to your class.

^ I know it :D I'm working on my notes now. And Fnord, I'll add your suggestion to my notecard about typical misconceptions people have about us.

I have a problem. My presentation is an hour and 10 minutes long. My class period is an hour and 15 minutes long. An hour straight of my monologuing leaves no time to show the video clips my teacher wants, and no time for questions. Super frustrating because I wanted to include everything about it, but I'm obviously going to have to cut some stuff out.

That's great!

One of my former special interests was Judaism (I love religions, and am doing a Masters degree in Theology right now). Although it is not an obsession right now, it was a HUGE, all-encompassing one before (so much so that I used to go to the synagogue despite knowing no one who is Jewish, almost converted, and even taught myself to read Hebrew in a day....) Anyway, in my religion pluralism class, we had to give a presentation on a non-Christian religion. I knew I would be the best one in the class for Judaism, so I asked for that one. 45 minutes on a subject I know practically everything there is to know about--yep, it was great! I finally was able to speak without looking like a moron!

That's awesome :D it is nice to feel every once in a while that you've had a successful social encounter, and demonstrating your expertise is a good way to get that, I bet your classmates were impressed.

Above all, probably facts about ASD's and try to debunk myths about them, making the awareness go up a bit. Also emphasising that people with ASD's (most) don't/can't think like them. And also likely making it aware of how we see it and how others treat us because of our issues.

Well, I gave my presentation this week and I think it went very well: people in my class told me I did awesome, and that they learned a lot, so that was good to hear. I covered pretty much everything I wanted to, including misconceptions about our ability to empathize, as well as the idea that not everyone automatically wants a treatment. I didn't have time to add the history of where AS and autism came from, but I don't think it was terribly relevant anyway, so yeah, my first class lecture was a success :D
