yes autistics can be greedy or selfish, and many of them are.

every negative characteristic you can apply to a member of the general population - pedophile, smelly, stingy, annoying, ignorant - can apply to autistics, there's no reason we should be totally exempt, though some super-extroverted behaviors may be less common.

we're not a separate species.

Mankind is selfish and greedy by nature.

Most autistic people are no more greedy and selfish than non-autistic people, and different cultures and individual people have different ideas about what's greedy and selfish and what isn't.

For example, sharing is generally seen as generous and nice, but not when it's the same drinking straw or ice cream cone because of germs.

Come to think of it, almost anything you share with people who cause cross contamination. That's why illness runs rampant at day cares and school and workplaces.

But then again, creating an environment that's too germ free can do more harm than good. Maybe the whole reason I don't get sick often or have food allergies and can digest gluten and lactose is because as a kid I must have eaten dirt right off the ground. Also I picked up and played around with worms and bugs and frogs and never thought of washing my hands afterwards. :eew:
But I digress. Nts like to believe we're greedy and selfish and all stuck in the terrible twos because of our so-called lack of the E word.

Yes, just like anyone else. I don't consider myself to be that way, but neither am I so generous that I can be easily taken advantage of. I like to keep and preserve what is mine.

Everybody is capable of being greedy and selfish. I choose not to be so.

My mom tells me I'm "selfish" sometimes. She doesn't understand: I care in different ways and it's hard to show it. I don't think I am selfish, but it's alright to aknowledge that you have a self.

Of course we can. Those are personality traits and personality traits aren't tied to a neurology.

In my experience people with aspergers are more self centered than normal people.

Then what personality traits do you think are tied to neurology?

Precisely. There is no "yes/no" simplistic binary answer to the title question of this thread. AS people, like NT people, and other people, are human beings; human beings can be greedy and selfish, to varying degrees, from almost never to extremely and often.

In my own life experience, I have particularly noticed a lot of projection around this issue: the greediest and most selfish people are the ones most likely to accuse others of it. I don't know if that perception has wider application generally though suspect that it does.

Doesn't "autism" mean "the self" or something similar?

I know for one thing I am quite selfish. I'm always thinking about myself. I have problems knowing when it's appropriate to share something I have. I have problems thinking and acting on others' wants or needs.

Not really greedy though. I don't think.
