I had my first meltdown earlier tonight in nearly three years. If it had only happened in front of my family, I wouldn't be so freaked about it, but of course I wasn't lucky enough for that. I've been hanging out with a friend I've known for awhile a fair bit the last few weeks and, although nothing was directed towards her, she was there to witness every second of it. I've been having a tough week with what has seemed like constant changes, had a shutdown a few days ago (I usually only have shutdowns and even then fairly rarely), and the frustration had been accumulating. Something (trivial) happened that was out of my control, which that was the last straw, and meltdown ensued.

This is actually my second situation like this, with the first happening when I was 13 at a sleepover with two of my friends. The meltdown terrified them and one never talked to me again after it while my friendship never recovered with the other one. Probably ranks in the top three most mortifying situations in my life. The difference between that situation and this one is I guess the fact that I actually somewhat know the whys of whats of it. I finally officially got diagnosed a couple of months or so ago.

Does anybody have advice on what I should do? Should I message her apologizing for putting her in an uncomfortable situation and give a brief explanation or should I go on like it did not happen? I feel horrible about it all.

I think you should explain what happened to your friend. Communication in situations like yours is never a bad thing, and if it is a bad thing, then your friend is more at fault (for not being understanding) than you.

You might feel better if you apologize.
