Hi I work as a seasonal GS-04 Park Guide at Assateague Island National Seashore during the summer. My position directly deals with the conservation and management of the feral horse population on the island. It's a job I dreamed of as a child and cannot believe I am actually doing it. I have fell in love with the NPS and wish to make it my career, preferably at Assateague. I don't know if this is going to happen though due to permanent positions being so hard to get. If any of you work at national parks I would like to hear whether your experiences have been as positive as mine and which park you work at too.

I've always wanted to be one. I am currently a biology major and thinking about possibly changing to Zoology so that I could have a better shot at working with Animals.

Park Ranger, Veterinarian, Marine Biologist. Those are my 10 year old son's top picks right now. One of my son's interests is fish and we were at a park museum once and he was looking at the fish hanging on the wall. The ranger came over and began spouting off facts about the various fish, and was actually impressed by what my son knew. When he walked away, my son turned to me with amazement in his eyes and said "you mean he gets paid to talk to people about fish?????" LOL!

Horsegurl, sounds like a dream job!! You must have such fascinating stories! I'm praying that you get a full time position.

Have you posted any stories on WP that you could direct me to? I'd love to read about your experiences at the Park.

I have not posted any stories on WP of my experiences, I have posted many notes about last year's summer though on Facebook. I can start posting stuff though. If you get time in summer or something you should come down to Assateague and meet me. I have tons of stories and observations of the horses' individual personalities, but I have trouble putting stuff that's stored in my memory like that on paper. That's actually the issue I'm having with my behavioral observations of the horses for grad school. I have them all stored and organized in my head, but I am struggling with putting them on paper lol.

I worked in National Park as scientist, but I had to leave cause of my former boss :? (I name his behavior "mobbing")

Now I'm still in environment protection, but as freelancer

I've held the title of Ranger, but it's because I worked as a tour guide in a botanical gardens. Very proud of my title, though.

All the best for a full-time position.

Wow... I envy you! I only daydream of things like this. Sometimes I think I would like to be a shepherd. Lots of sheep, a dog, nature and NO HUMANS... A pity you cannot earn much money with such a job.
