I've been trying to meditate recently but found out that the more relaxed I become the more likely that I'll have an over-the-top reaction to something completely innocuous, like a fridge restarting its cycle (or whatever fridges do when they 'click') - if anyone was observing me they'd think I just saw a shark heading in my direction, or something.

I think this is the root of many of my problems when interacting with the environment. I try to avoid all outrageous noise... but this is a fridge that scares the hell out of me! (Or is that common while in a relaxed state? Damn, I can never remain relaxed.)

Is there seriously anything practical I can do? I've been trying to meditate for this exact reason, but it's so difficult when I'm hypersensitive... or does this mellow out with increments of meditation?

Yep its just anxiety. Hard to turn the damn thing off. I find trying to focus on it only makes it worse.

huh? I'm sorry. As far as I'm aware I sometimes try to provoke people to think about their own mistakes/logical loopholes/false assumptions by the means of sarcasm, but I have never, never been outright rude.

Meditation in my experience can give me short moments of relaxation in between the hyper-vigilance, but this can still be very relaxing. I have not always found meditation brings relaxation, but it can generally make me calmer. When I'm very hyper a walking based meditation can be better than a sitting one.

Have you tried once you have been startled gently taking your attention back to your breath or whatever you are using to concentrate on; if you bring your attention back slowly and gently it can, with practice, be possible to re-focus.

Also when I was first starting to do meditation I found it a lot easier to use audio guided meditations to help me maintain concentration (maybe if you have earphone on - this might also soften strange sounds a bit, which might help you to be less distracted oe shocked.)

There are lots of free examples you can download - google should help but I can post links if you wish.

[Edited to improve clarity]

Really, looks to me like your looking for any posts with people talking about things that bother them so you can make sarcastic/rude comments at them.

Well considering he posted 'kill them first' in a thread in which it was being discussed that people with AS are not more likely to commit violence than those without.....even though as of late the media has been jumping on the 'omg watch out for 'those' people.' after that recent shooting.

The 'kill them first' I believe was in reference to him saying people with AS should be killed before they commit violence. I suppose he wasn't aware that might have been rude either in a site full of people with AS.

Well then he is probably just trolling around.

Has anyone ever turned their sensitivity into a pleasure? I often get to a point where all my senses seem heightened
and every sensation so strong it feels intoxicating as long as it is pleasant of course. :D

nolan1971, that was actually what my childhood was like... back when I wasn't overwhelmed with negativity. It's like electrical polarity: the same strength but in the opposite direction.

From what I observed psychedelics seem to have the potential of changing this polarity, but of course, long-term that defeats the purpose...

The positive side of my bipolar often brings it on when I get in a almost manic happy mood.
I have learned to feel like that more often with meditation.
I try to loose all self control over my positive emotions love, joy, etc and only try to tame the negative ones.
I have found I have more control over my symptoms by not trying to control them if you understand what I mean. :D
More control by just letting go!
