Often I'm not sure whether my personality problems are due to either the violent dysfunctional family I was trapped in or AS. I suppose AS has some dysfunctional traits to an outsider... but would you say that AS-specific traits are usually accepted by the individual? And as such, all of the other traits which I actively detest are due to the dysfunctionality?

I would not. I never accepted them. In any social situation they are not traits one would think highly of. They are often traits connected to failure. But personally I learned more about me through years of being more alone, and came to conclusions about myself that could not have been done differently. When I got some information about the other sides of Aspergers, like how someone with it feels, and started to do some actions and to habituate I felt it fit me more, I lost a lot of tension, and it has just escalated from there. You just feel that it suits you. Especially when you meet others with AS. That must be some kind of way to know you have it yourself. And that it this is so much better for you in the bigger picture.

all of the other traits which I actively detest are due to the dysfunctionality?

There is a difference between behavioural problems and problems due to a defect in the brain and developmental difficulties. You could also get a lot of help from a psychologist on this case, but then you have to be aware of the possibility of AS yourself. Psychologists often make mistakes with AS and diagnose you with something that is merely psychological instead.

I'm going through something similar, and I'm on another forum to talk about the abuse I suffered. The people on there are trying to convince me that I have post traumatic stress disorder, and that the symptoms "mimic" AS - but in my gut I know that I have AS AND had the displeasure of being raised in an abusive home. I'm starting to be able to separate the issues that I have that come from my upbringing, and the ones that are from the AS. I find that educating myself on both of the issues is helping me to do that.

I personally think that you should'nt listen to others on things like this, they misunderstand and misinterpret so freaking much. Trust in your guts and try to make that work.

Hmm well as far as I know PTSD and AS have some similarities, but certainly not enough for it to completely mimic AS. Also it is very possible to have both disorders as well so it doesn't make sense that they would be so convinced you have PTSD rather than AS and though you mention being raised in an abusive home that does not nessisarily mean you'd have PTSD since traumatic events do not cause PTSD for everyone.
