My main interest is computers/programming, but I find myself having a lot of special interests like astronomy, reptiles/amphibians, comics, playing guitar, etc....

I know people have interests, but i'm practically obsessed with all of those subjects. I always have to know everything about them! I sometimes divide my interests to separate days, so I can dedicate time to all of them equally.

Is this common?

It's common with me. I've drifted from songwriting to guitar playing to short story writing to studying crows to luthiery to creating bootable USB Linux distros to scoring classical music using Finale or Sibelius to sequencing music using Cubase to trying to lose weight using a FIR sauna to novella writing. I guess it keeps me pretty busy.

I know exactly what you mean with my primary interest/obsession being atmospheric sciences followed very closely by guitar/singing/piano, bodybuilding, old-growth trees, skyscrapers, cars, paleontology, art, ocean liners and quite a few more....for me, I've been completely absorbed by all of these topics at one point in time but do sort of cycle through them on a day to day basis like you said, though without actually consciously choosing.
