If you don't know, you can test your reading speed here: http://www.readingsoft.com/

I read about 1600 words per minute

I personally have cognitive deficits in reading that I have to constantly work on...when I was about twelve i took the SAT and studied at UCSC for a summer. Now, due to the illness I can't focus enough to read all the time. I feel I need more motivation, or the chemical imbalance makes it harder to soak everything up like I used to. I miss it, because I would read like Ulysses or Jane Eyre when I was younger, and now I have trouble sticking to one book before it's boring and I pick another book.

Starting college again this semester will help a lot. I have to pace myself. Last semester I withdraw from classes at finals because I fell behind and didn't just stick to it. I do well when someone gives me a direction so that I can follow it, and then conform to it. For instance, I like homework because it's something I can learn and follow along with. On my own I can be pretty aimless and not follow the routines.

Sorry if this isn't quite autism related. I have Aspergers undiagnosed and schizoaffective.

What does this topic have to do with autism?

well according to the test I read 1981 words a minute at 85% comprehension though it don''t think the comprehension test is accurate
I can read a 700 page book in about four- eight hours depending on page size, interest and if I have read it before or not..

i can see why people might think that.. though I don't think that is the case as such I think most Aspies read more so they have more pratice at reading and thus getter better also the focus sometimes attributed to AS makes reading easier..

I think I'm going to try and learn speed reading now. I read only 360 wpm. I also had to read aloud to have the comprehension better. I haven't been reading in awhile either, so this is probably why. I can type fast though.

I need to wake up, and I'll have the quiet time to do this after my wife goes to work, but I know I have a low reading speed. I'm a slow but deep processor. My reading speed actually impeded my ability to complete an English degree, but I would be more able to have a complex literary theory discussion than most of the class. I used to read a lot, but I struggle to find anything modern and unique enough in its writing style to hold my interest anymore. In my writing, I'm experimenting with the idea of an aspie third person POV. I don't want to read things with a lot of emotional assumptions and people read for you. I need more Brett Easton Ellis. Less Than Zero was disconnected in a similar way.

703 wpm. When I'm reading for pleasure it's probably half that, though. What's the rush?

EDIT: My guess was close: reading as I would read a novel, 333 wpm.

You read at 436 words per minute.

Thought that was a bit high for me as i have struggles reading. But this was non-fiction so i could get through that faster.

Boy, I'm a slow reader, probably because I like to hear the words in my head as I read. My speed is 249 wpm and my comprehension was 91%, with 10 out of 11 answers correct. I found I could remember those basic facts well. What I didn't remember well, and guessed on (with one wrong and the other right), was the analogies between sprinters and race car drivers, when they asked how fast they could walk/talk/run or something, and I found it very confusing, wondering what on earth they had to do with speed reading and why they appeared on the text. I would have had a 100% if not for those two questions.

I resd at 232 words prr minute, and 92% comprehension.

I knew I wasn't fast, I thought I would be below average, and ended up average on speed and high in comprehension.

Reading for comprehension or pleasure I read about 2000-2500 wpm on most material (~95% comprehension). If I try to read straight for speed I can get to 5000 wpm on some material (probably about 70% comprehension, maybe a bit below that, as low as I'll find at acceptable to go).

I'm a natural speed reader, I've not trained this any more than just being a kid who grew up with books. When I was in my evaluation for my Asperger's diagnosis there was a reading test in it and he kept not taking me seriously when I asked what we'd do if I read faster than the test could measure, and kept telling me to not try to read fast. I kept trying to tell him that I was actually trying to seriously ask him this question. After the test he actually realized why I was asking, when he asked again and I said I'd not read for speed and then when on the comprehension questions I had a particularly high score.

I don't think its important for people to learn to speed read - though there are benefits to reading faster. Comprehension is more important. If people want to train themselves to read faster - I don't suggest to try to read at really abnormally fast rates - its not worth it.

I agree; speed-reading isn't worth it. It's like people want to "get it over with" or something. I enjoy reading, thank-you-very-much.

I read at ~1000 wpm, but only when I'm trying to read fast. If I'm not trying, I'll read much more slowly because I want to stop, re-read, think about things, admire a nicely-worded phrase, connect new concepts to old ones.
