My mom and I have a pretty good relationship. She lives pretty far so I see her once a year. Last time I was down I did something that I didn't realize I've been doing for years. While my mom was watching TV, I would turn to her and make wierd faces - sticking out my tongue and rolling my eyes. Why, I'm not really sure, I think I was really bored. My mom turned to me and said "I really thought you had outgrown that by now". Apparently I would do this off and on through my childhood.

A month or so ago, I could see my daughter doing the same thing out of the corner of my eye. I was watching something on my computer, and I could see her sticking out her tongue. I turned to face her and she stopped and I asked what she was doing, she went back to sucking on her thumb (this is her stim) and mumbled nothing.

I've seen references to faces in the discussions, is this an aspie or ADHD specific type of thing or can I put it down to being bored?

I talked to so many professionals and it's really hard for me to know what typical/atypical behaviour is, and I am at a loss of understanding why what they see with my kid is atypical when I always think kids are kids and they..well they just do things.

No idea why but I'm a somewhat functional grown adult back at home and I catch quite the hell for it. Granted, some of it is based on my displeasure at my family's banal interests but mostly I'm just mentally tapping my foot pretending to be engaged but in reality waiting until I'm off the hook so I can pursue my activities

Other people have noticed that I sometimes have unusual facial expressions....my dad has noticed that I have an unusual facial expression when looking into the sun (probably bcuz of a sensory issue I have with brightness) and a friend of his at work has told me that I sometimes "mimic" the same expressions my father has. I was not aware of this at all. His friend thought it was hilarious, tho, and said he wanted to take a picture of me doing it sometime.

And then there are the times when I make faces in a mirror on purpose for no reason at all.

I never did anything like that, except in the mirror because it looked funny. When I first saw the title, I thought this was going to be about imitating the faces of others, which I did a lot when I was younger.

THis has nothing to do with your post, because I don't do that and have nothing to say about it, but when I saw your picture in your avatar (I'm assuming that's you) I thought you were a teenager. Then when I read that you had a child, I looked and saw your age. Kudos! You look really young!

Thanks for the replies Wheels, Coup and Alphonso. I think in my and my daughters cases it has to do with annoying our moms, as well another one of those things.

OliveOilMom - thanks for the compliment! That is me (about a year ago), my kids going to be 7 soon too, time certianly flies when the school year is out. When I was younger people always thought I was older, now that I'm older people always think I'm younger. I think it has to do with my pudginess filling out what would otherwise be lines all over!
