I am doing a school RE project on whether 'disability discrimination is an issue in the uk?'
I want to know whether anyone here has ever been descriminated against and how, do you feel it still happens a lot. If you don't want me to include your message specifically in my research I won't use it but will count you as a statistic.

I'm surprised nobody posted because this sounds rather interesting. I feel like I'm discriminated against. I have the impression that nobody will employ me because I'm stuck in that trap where I'm ''too normal to say I've got a disability, too 'disabled' to say I'm normal'', which is very difficult to comprehend. I've been on job-seekers for over 4 years now, and I've done a lot of things to gain experience and confidence, by doing work experiences, various courses on health and safety and basic skills, and I'm currently doing voluntary work. But nobody will employ me or even give me a trial, and I think part of it is my disability going against me. I know in the UK jobs are hard to find, everybody knows that, but I thought I would have got something after 4 years, even just a part-time job (I am looking for anything over 14 hours, at least). It's really putting me down, and it's now become fruitless.

You can anomynously include what I wrote in your project. It's a shame nobody else posted though.

Oh yes!

Background:

Unemployed since January 2010 and signed on for JSA. I was referred to the work programme. In May I was diagnosed with Autism and Hyperacusis. (many people with Autism have the latter) I informed my adviser and told her what adjustments I would need. She refused. Her reason being that because I'd only just been diagnosed, it can't be that bad. If she knew a thing about Hyerpacusis, she'd know that it's possible to spend most of your life normal and then wake up with it. She said she'd think about making adjustments. Now, if anyone knows anything about the law, you must make adjustments unless you can justify it. (Justifying is usually a health and safety thing)

Anyway, I had a meeting with her, which was my idea of hell. (noise) I then said I can not come in and can only have phone conversations. (these are difficult; but easier than coming in) She refused and got her line manager involved. Her line manager took her side.

She eventually agreed to phone conversations. Except there was one problem. I was promised a call at 2.45pm and was phoned at 5.15pm. Now, I accept that when someone says they'll call me at a certain time, they may be busy and call 10 minutes later or so. But 2 and a half hours later? No. I would be a in lot of trouble if I turned up 2 and a half hours late.

Just before I signed off sick, I sent an email to her manager and explained everything that happened and said that I think your staff need disability awareness training. (this is at least the fourth incident where no adjustments have been made and I got the blame for someone elses refusal to do their job properly) They also need to understand that I am the expert on my condition. I do not like being told what is a problem for me and isn't.

They asked for a copy of my fit note. It said valid for 1 month. Job centre and myself both say this means July 2nd to August 2nd. I received a voicemail and a text message telling me I have an appointment on July 30th. They send me the text on the 29th. I need a lot more notice than 23 hours. :x
