Hi-

I heard there is a link between Autsim and heart arrythmias....does anyone else have them?

I have not told my cardio because from others I have talked to they generally do not know the link.

Has anyone else had issues with this?

Thanks!

I have not heard of any link. I've been worrying about heart arrythmias this week after experiencing some weird symptoms.

Yes, sometimes... but so do my very NT mom and sister. In my case it seems to be inherited.

Perhaps this is yet another symptom of our inability to process stress appropriately?

I developed Super-Ventricular Tachicardia as a young adult. However, this was due to drug abuse (a foolish special interest that I had for a few years).

The link could be a function of many children on the spectrum being prescribed Ritalin, Adderol and the like, rather than something that is intrinsic to ASD's.

ehlers-danlos syndrome is sometimes comorbid with autism and can cause heart problems.. though the heart problems are technically comorbid with that.

I've never heard of any connection, and I don't have that problem.

Tentative. Many autists are somewhat double jointed. Ehlers-danlos causes that as well.

I don't know about a causal link, but a correlation wouldn't surprise me. Increased likelihood of stress, increased likelihood of drug use, incresaed likelihood of bad fitness and health in general.

My ticker definatley isn't right, but it runs in my family and the drug/alcohol/fitness/stress levels probably haven't helped.

Great point- like Freak-o-nomics. It is not the AS but the stress and ways we cope with it.

It's like stress itself, if you did nothing with it, may not harm you. It's just that most people under stress and the ones they study are on some kind of medication, prescribed or otherwise!

I am aspergers and I was diagnosed with arythmia about a year ago. There could be a causal link between stress and heart disease and who amongst us isn't subject to more than usual stress linked to work, relationships etc.

This is very interesting. I began having a noticeable arrhythmia problem when I was in middle school. I have had numerous EKGs since that time. The doctors always tell me the kind I have is not the bad kind, but no arrhythmia is good. I skip on about every fourth to fifth beat. And sometimes, especially after eating or drinking something really cold, I will go into a really fast rhythm before going into a totally funky rhythm for anywhere from a few minutes to a couple days. I am interested to see more posts on this.

This is so weird, I just went to the emergency room in January for heart palpitations, my heart was beating really strongly and somewhat fast for 4 days. My cardiologist said is might be related to Mitral Valve Prolapse diagnosed as a teen, but no other tests showed anything out of the ordinary. I wore a portable EKG for 48 hours and kept a diary of activities, I'm waiting for results.

I never heard of a connection to autism or asperger's, but I'm going to look into it now.

Valve prolapse is a symptom of ehlers-danlos(though it doesnt mean you have that).
