I have been told that I can't get a diagnosis via NHS as the screening was sufficient. Um, it wasn't. It was a total of 1 hour. Is that really enough? So, my only option is private. Is private diagnosis recognised by NHS as valid?

Has anyone obtained a private diagnosis?

Part of my reasoning is the lack of evidence for my case. I have letters which state that I am diagnosed; but there is no way that is proof on what my needs are. The GP can't understand this.

Anyone know roughly the going rate for private diagnosis?

I am a bit confused about your question... You have a letter stating your diagnosis (NHS) but you want another diagnosis? Why?

A private diagnosis is not going to assess your needs. It just going to tell you that you have or don't have Aspergers. It sounds like you have that already, even if you think that the process was brief. I was diagnosed through the NHS but it was quite a battle. It was though just a diagnosis. The rest my wife and I have had to work out.

You should remember that we all have different needs when you get past the issues common to us all. The impact that Aspergers has on an individual, is just that, individual. Some manage quite well in a NT world but others struggle. For an assessment of your needs you probably need to talk to social services, but be aware if you are over 18 and independent living they will be reluctant to deal with you. Don't take no for an answer and keep asking for help until you get it.

The specialist who diagnosed me didn't do the assessment of needs part. That was done by an occupational therapist, specialising in autism, once I had the diagnosis.

If you want a statement of your particular, practical, day to day problems (ie how AS affect you) ask to be referred to your occupational therapist. Some GPs have them on site, others will refer you to your local hospital.

I was screened and was told there is a high chance that I have Autism. I do not actually have a diagnosis.

I feel I've also been lied to about this - the hospital claim they don't diagnose people; they only screen people. (what I had) But I know of at least one person who was fully assessed.

I was assessed for roughly one hour - that is nowhere near enough time for a diagnosis.

Personally, I would argue the decision.

Privately, you're looking at around £100-£150 per hour, maybe even more depending on who you see.

There's a meeting related to the way adults are treated by the NHS in my area. It's been suggested I go along to do. Have got PALS and my MP involved.

There's virtually no service in my area unless I want to go private.
