Does anyone else constantly feel surrounded by an invisible wall, even if you're in a room full of people? What do you do to cope?

I think it was Rudy Simone who said that Aspies aren't blocked by a glass ceiling, we're blocked by a glass wall.

We can see other people and they can see us ... but we are separated from them.

I get this feeling too, but it's probably more because of my derealization brought on by severe anxiety than Asperger's (but the two could be related).

To be honest, When I have all those feelings of alienation that come to being on the spectrum I take comfort from the words of a wise man: Freddy Mercury

The show must go on (2x)

Yep and it doesn't matter who and where either. The wall thing pretty much applies to every type of group I have ever been around.

I definitely have this!! ! I have always had it, is it strange, and I am not sure where it comes from.

I often feel surprised when people notice me due to this

More like a cloudy glass wall.

You can see through it, but it is often too murky to make much sense.

Not sure, but wouldn't one need to know both states in order to distinguish them? If i'm surrounded by a glass or any other wall, and i reckon this might very well be the case, then it must have always been that way because it's the only state i know.

I tend to feel like I am invisible.

I envy you. I wish I could be invisible and go about my business in peace. I feel like I stand out too much, like I'm a target or it's known that I'm different than the rest, and they hold it against me.

I don't mind being different from others. I just wish they'd let me be different in peace.

I get the feeling very often though I am an outgoing NT. I too have anxiety.

It even separates us from each other. It's more like a glass box.

No I don't. I have never felt like there was any kind of physical barrier separating me from other people or from the objects in my surroundings, I just had the feeling that everybody hated me the instant they saw me, and every compliment I was given was sarcastic. Don't have that feeling much very often at this point either, to tell the truth. Unless I get drunk. I still feel like people are insulting me when they use ambiguous language or display insincere body language when I'm drunk. Yeah I can read body language now, so what?

edit: Were you talking about a metaphorical wall? If so I still can't say since I've never seen one.

yes, I have that feeling too. But it's not a physical barrier, it's a mental barrier. And only I can see it.

I like my wall. Without it, I would be overwhelmed by the information coming in from everybody else. With it, I can ignore some things and carefully analyze others, and get the optimum amount of information for the best possible communication. Sometimes, the problem with being autistic and socializing is not that you don't get enough information--it's that you get too much, and you can't figure out what is relevant and what isn't.
