cures for self-involvement
Since my formal diagnosis last year, the curse/blessing of my extraordinary long term memory has caused me to spend many of my waking hours ruminating about the life choices i made and particularly missed romantic/sexual opportunities when i was single. If my marriage was rocky before diagnosis, it certainly hasn't been improved since. I have tried in vain to find distractions eg charity work, helping more with the kid's homework, but still ruminate about myself and my misfortune about not having been empowered by an earlier diagnosis (I now am 51). Any suggestions?

I know this is easier said then done and I ruminate too but you cannot do anything about the past and perseverating on bad past experiences will not make them go away or change the future (because you're not thinking about how to change things.....just going over the same failures again and again). It is unproductive and will only serve to make the present more unpleasant. Also the AS gives you an explanation for these failures so at least you know they weren't caused by you not trying hard enough or anything. So, stop the rumination. Then ....I don't know how to cure self absorption I haven't done it but you're married so you can ask your wife what would make your relationship better and what you could do for her to be less selfish and a better partner to her....then, just try to do it. Same thing with your child you could ask him what he wishes you could do with him or for him. Other than that just keep doing what you're doing....the charity work and helping your son with his homework and just try to be a good person.... because really, that's all anyone can do.
