are the words 'stemming' and 'stimming' being used to mean the same there round these parts?

If so:
1) When did this come about?
2) How can we make the 'stemming' crowd die slowly and in great pain? because they are WRONG.

(My cynical guess: "Stemming" is US-speak).

Yeah, a lot of people can't spell and speak funny, or else just don't really pay a lot of attention to which words other people use. which can cause a lot of words to come out garbled when they write them down.

It's like those people who say "condone" instead of "condemn" even though they mean the opposite.
As in "I can't condemn your behaviour".

I could care less. And by that I mean I couldn't care less, of course.

We should find out if stemming is a mis-type or misunderstanding, fo sho.

It's stimming, short for self-stimulation. There was a thread a while back where someone questioned the OP using 'stemming' instead of stimming and they said it was a typo and they meant stimming. Since then others have picked up on it, perhaps thinking that's what the word is or that it's another similar word for the same thing. I feel embarrassed for the posters whenever I see it. The 'e' and the 'i' aren't even near each other on the keyboard so I don't understand how the typo comes about. There are many different levels of literacy on WP though, I would hate to make someone feel bad for making a little spelling error.

I'm guessing that "stemming" is just a misspelling. We have people here with dyslexia and other reading disorders, so being nasty about it is probably uncalled for.

I'd never be nasty to someone who suffered from daily sex (ha! See what I did there?), and there's no proof that the 'stemmers' (so to speak) have any such difficulties. I just see common-or-garden error being copycatted by others (see also: "Could care less" ... gggggrrrrrr)

Is that "Stemming thread..." thread in the Random Discussion sub-forum also meant to be "Stimming"?

Yes. Its about stimming. Not about branching off into new experiences, or anything else that the image of "stemming" might imply.

Okay, so...

If you see a thread entitled "stemming" on Wrongplanet, and you deduce that the person must be conflating words- and that they must have meant "stimming" ( and you click on the thread and that is indeed the case) then you have indulged in "stemming" (because you have deduced the correct 'stem' of the person's wrong use of "stemming" .

But if you see people missusing "stemming" for "stimming" so often that it that it drives you crazy enough to start hitting yourself in the face- then you're "stimming"!.

Thanks. I was wondering what that thread was about. I never posted there because I didn't know how other people's posts there related to "stemming" (whatever it is).

I would also like to point out that there are other mixups of words that seem to happen quite often.
