High functioning autism or autism.

Isn't high functioning autism/aspergers the same. I was told it isn't.

They aren't the same thing. Hence the different names.

A diagnosis of autism requires the presence of a speech delay.
Aspies are more likely to want social interaction.
It's often in an Aspies nature to change themselves to be more like those around them, more so than your average high-functing autistic. A big difference I have noticed is that Aspies talk about playing a character/acting to appear like an NT a lot more than autistics.
Just some differences.

IMO, the only differences between someone with HFA and someone with Asperger Syndrome is the language delays. Someone with Asperger Syndrome can, hypothetically, not have much of a desire to talk to people, and still qualify for an Asperger diagnosis.

Functionally, there's no difference. Asperger and Kanner discovered the same thing separately; so the two categories just kind of developed alongside each other, with slightly different definitions, with Asperger's emphasizing the social aspect and Autistic Disorder emphasizing the verbal-communication aspect.

The differences between individual people far outweigh the differences between Asperger's and Kanner's type autism in general--a professional treating somebody with either one has to take things on a case-by-case basis. Knowing which particular category they labeled you with doesn't add any information.

It's a benefit, in a way. People with one diagnosis can try all the different coping strategies, services, accommodations, and therapy that the people with the other diagnosis find useful. There's a good chance they'll work, because of how similar those categories are. Here at WP I can't tell who has what unless they tell me. Not even "I spoke late" will reveal it, because many people are diagnosed Asperger's even if they did.

Commander data would be aspergers, while the terminator would be HFA.

Atleast that`s how I see it.

I do admit though it`s a really annoying thing.

I feel like I have little in common with someone with HFA, yet I`m clearly autistic.

I prefer the term emotional autism. Most of what I am is a product of the lack of emotional contact.

I think the stimming, and obsessive nature, has more to do with social isolation, than the emotional distance itself.
