OK, I dont socially chit-chat and I personally feel that people may not think I am a 'team' player or they may think 'wrongly' of me. I've heard of people losing their jobs over such a mentality (although I dont think my situation is similar to that)

I was thinking 'How can I become better known here. People probably don't know that I like to joke/laugh (stone cold look all the time) or that I have interests and can be extensively creative?' Then it hit me. Office message board, just like this one!

An office message board would allow people like myself (and the whole programming department) do better interact with others at work on a different and new level. I CANNOT express my ideas during a meeting because people talk too fast (and the meeting of 2.5 hours is normally summarized on 1 piece of paper, point form) nor can I effectively volunteer information.

Does anyone think this is a good idea? I'm young, 25, and am fresh in the 'business' field so I dont know if this has been tried before or not.

I got a warning in work over one of my co-workers finding me rude so it could well happen
I am slitly younger than you 23
but I do find the same problems fiting in as a team player.

Office MB can be dangerous there was a case in Ireland recenltly with Ryanair being sued over coments made about certian members of staff by other staff on the work mb.
A lot of companes would be wary of such legislation

Ever since we got our office IM, I have DEFINITELY been communicating better with my co-workers!

Well, we can say these things verbally so I don't think the case in Ireland is the result from the 'messageboard' but rather those who used it - the message board was merely the means to transfer the communication which could have been done verbally. I'd think the only problem the message board could serve is 'volatile' information becoming available there - which, during my eventual suggestion to the chief, I'd state that it was strictly a 'low level' message board, more social and about other things from work (at most, it could include stuff ABOUT work but not our practices, just experiences)

We have an 'IM'ing service here but its still a bit weak. There is still 'conversation' starters which are still difficult to pull off. I find it easier to post a topic then message someone - they can read it at their free will rather then me force a question for them to answer.

here in the Antipodes, nearly every office has a football tipping competition.

Being in IT you could try organising one (or hockey/basketball/whatever.

Talking about football is like talking about the weather. Its a safe subject that doesn't offend anyone. I'm not that interested in football, but being able to talk about it is an office social skill.

Did I forget to say you can use it to make sexist mysogonist type remarks about it being a guy thing. Girls are no good at footy or footy tipping and just don't get it. :P

I'm a business student and I will be graduating soon. That means I will be in the job market soon.

Can you describe your experience in the business field as it relates to Aspergers Syndrome? I am very curious to hear of other aspies in this field.

thanks

Ya, I sit at my computer while the girl across from me 'talks in between the lines' about how great socializing is while I sit and stare at my screen all day.

Seriously, I'm almost a mute at work. I dont even have a fun - Thank god Calgary is desperate for workers - I dont think I'd be able to get away with this anywhere else

If you can talk, then you'll be fine for handling business - I can even recommend a wicked book to help you do business - Its SOOO worth the read and if your wallet depends on talking/meeting people, read it!

Dale Carnegie - How to win friends and influence people

I already used some of the "techniques" he talks about (not really techniques, just truths and psychology, really) and they do work (reflecting on my life, I've been good at having people like me (they just dont interact with me much))

Corvus,

Managers would hate it! They LOVE to run things and waste time.

lowfreq50,

Programming USED to be a GREAT field for an ASPIE. NOW, it can be pretty bad. Problems?

1. On even a PERCEIVED problem, they will try to ensure you can't do your job by:

a. Having endless meetings
b. Second guessing everything.
c. stuffing people into your cubicle to LITERALLY look over your shoulder

2. They LOVE stupid meetings, playing phone tag, etc...

3. They don't believe in personal distance anymore!

CRAZY! As a little KID in the 60s, I got FAR more space than I do now, even though I probably take up twice as much floor space now.

4. ALSO, they may put you in a "bull pen" so that nobody has privacy.

5. A lot of places have stupid people, or bad alarms, so they can go off too often.

You COULD spend the whole day without seeing anyone or talking though.

Steve
